Title: Engineering Notation

1
Engineering Notation
  • When numbers are extremely large or small,
    engineering notation is used.
  • The process of converting numbers to engineering
    notation is a simple process.
  • Steps in the Process
  • 1. Any number that is greater than 1000 or less
than 1 must be expressed in engineering notation.
  • 2. The decimal is move in multiples of 3 until
the number is between 1 and 1000.
  • 3. The prefix used is based on the number of
places the decimal had to be moved to meet step
    2s requirement.
  • 4. The prefix is placed in front of the unit of
    the number.

2
Prefixes in Engineering Notation
  • For large numbers
  • 3 decimal moves equals a thousand or103 the
    prefix is k for kilo.
  • 6 decimal moves equals a million or106 the prefix
    is M for mega.
  • 9 decimal moves equals a billion or 109 the
    prefix is G for giga.
  • 12 decimal moves equals a trillion or1012 the
    prefix is T for tera.

  • An example
  • Convert the following numbers to Engineering
    Notation
  • 25000 W ____________
  • 1. The decimal needs to be moved 3 places to
    the left.
  • 2. 103 represents the move of 3 decimals, the
    prefix is k for kilo.
  • The answer is 25 kW.

Prefixes in Engineering Notation
  • For small numbers
  • 3 decimal moves equals a thousandth or 10-3 the
    prefix is m for milli.
  • 6 decimal moves equals a millionth or10-6 the
    prefix is m for micro.
  • 9 decimal moves equals a billionth or 10-9 the
    prefix is n for nano.
  • 12 decimal moves equals a trillionth or 10-12 the
    prefix is p for pico.
