Title: Education and Outreach QuarkNet
1Education and Outreach QuarkNet
- Randy Ruchti
- USCMS Education Coordinator
- USCMS Annual Meeting, Florida State University
- 10-11 May 2002
2E and O Activities
- Education and Outreach Booklet for all of HEP
- Sessions on Education and Outreach at DPF2002
- QuarkNet Project, now in its fourth year
- REU/RET at CERN (Northeastern/Michigan)
- USCMS Fellows
- Visitor Gallery at SX5
- New Directions
3QuarkNet
- Partners high school teachers with particle
physicists who act as mentors. - Teachers get summer research experience.
- Centers are established where additional
teachers, students and physicists are included in
the program. - Program is funded by US NSF/MPS, NSF/ESIE and DOE
- Preliminary program 1998 Full program 1999
- Up to 60 centers are planned over a 5-year
period. - The proponents for this idea and project
- M. Bardeen (Fermilab Education Office)
- R. M. Barnett (LBNL, Atlas Education Coordinator)
- O. Keith Baker (Hampton Univ)
- R. Ruchti (Notre Dame, USCMS Education
Coordinator)

9REU, RET, REHS
- REU
- Research Experiences for Undergraduates
- Funded by NSF
- US programs
- National
- Any physics area
- US program at CERN Northeastern Univ.
- HEP specific
- US program at CERN
- Univ. of Michigan
- HEP specific
- RET
- Research Experiences for Teachers
- Funded by NSF
- US programs
- Any physics area
- US program at CERN
- Northeastern Univ.
- HEP specific
- REHS
- Research Experiences for HS Students
- Pilot program at Notre Dame
- Support from D0, CMS, ND
- Initially HEP specific
- Intend any physics area
10USCMS Fellows
- Follow on to the first year of QuarkNet to give
HS teachers an in-depth 8-week summer research
experience. - Typically several teachers supported for the
summer. - Piloted in previous summers.
- This year 4 Fellowships
- TTU
- FIT
- Iowa
- OleMiss
- It would be good to expand this to 6 in future
years.
11Visitor Gallery at SX5
- Effort led by Dave Barney.
- One of the most popular spots on the CERN
laboratory tour for visitors. - A mezzanine location at the assembly hall.
- Currently under development.
- We have provided a cosmic ray detector. Should
have additional video camera plus display screen. - Seeking additional detector items for display
- Megatile with WLS fibers.
- Optical decoder unit.
- Other detector components.
12New Directions
- Update USCMS Website education items.
- Post talks with sort at various levels.
- Develop a USCMS Brochure.
- Issues at CERN Project Office for USCMS.
- New ideas and suggestions welcome
