What is PPP?
  • Presence, Posture, Profile (PPP) is a drill to
assist forces in determining the attitude,
deportment, and level of security they should
    adopt in any given situation

  • PPP is not Staff driven

PRESENCE
  • The impact that the mere presence of a force may
have on perceptions might be significant
  • Deploying even limited capability to the right
place at the right time can add substantial
credibility to messages being delivered through
other channels and provide a major contribution
    to deterrence
  • Depending on the situation, that presence will
    carry meaning

POSTURE
  • At its simplest form it is the body language of
    the Force
  • The posture of troops on the ground can
demonstrate both commitment and intent and must
be considered and balanced with the requirement
    for force protection
  • At the simplest level, the decision to wear
berets instead of combat helmets and body armor
can make a considerable difference to the
perceptions of both the enemy and local people
  • This includes how we arrive into an area, how
visible we are, how much artillery, infantry,
tanks, air and naval support that we bring, how
we dress, and how we patrol
  • Remember that PPP is command driven

PROFILE
  • The public profile of commanders at all levels
    will impact on perceptions
  • The public role of the commander must be
carefully analyzed and opportunities used to
    transmit key messages
  • What we do how regularly we patrol, whether we
talk to civilians, this is about our specific
interactions with the individuals and groups in
    the AO
  • The commander plays an especially important part.
His public profile can impact upon perceptions
and may create opportunities to get messages
    across
  • It goes to the extent of how often we are
patrolling, do we engage with the LN
