  • The Underground Railroad was a system of stops
    leading from the Southern to the Northern United
    States, or Canada.
  • Michigan was a very important state because it
    was so close to Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Levi Coffin House
The Levi Coffin House was known as the Grand
Central Station of the Underground Railroad. It
was home to Levi and Catherine Coffin. They
helped many slaves escape through their home in
Newport, Indiana. This house is even featured in
Uncle Toms Cabin.

Dr. Nathan Thomas House
The Dr. Nathan Thomas House is located in
Schoolcraft, Michigan. With the help of his wife,
they helped 1,000-1,500 slaves escape to slavery
through their house. One of the advantages of
stopping at his house, was that the slaves could
be treated for illnesses or injuries by the
Doctor.

The Second Baptist Church, in Detroit, was
Michigans first African American congregation.
Being miles away from Windsor, this church became
a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Laura Haviland
  • Laura Haviland was a Quaker who, with her
    husbands help, established the first Michigan
    stop of the Underground Railroad.
  • She helped many slaves to escape, even after
    losing her family to illness.
