2What is KRIS?
- A collaborative service that connects research
users from around the world to research documents
produced in New Zealand institutions.
3Vision
- The Kiwi Research Information Service (KRIS)
will open up - and promote publicly funded research at
universities, - polytechnics and other research providers in New
Zealand - and make publications easy to find.
4Mission
- acceptance of KRIS as adding value to New Zealand
open access institutional research repositories
through - Establishment and operation of http//nzresearch.o
rg.nz/ website as a single point of discovery - Harvesting of metadata from NZ research
repositories which contain research outputs that
meet the definition of research adopted by KRIS - Encouragement of high quality metadata
- Enhancement of aggregated metadata
- Aiming to provide complete coverage of high
quality NZ research outputs - Promotion of open access to publicly funded
research - Support of an active community

8The year ahead
- More partners
- More promotion
- Facilitate more knowledge sharing between
institutional repository staff
9Metadata Quality
- KRIS validates the metadata it harvests and makes
metadata quality reports available to the
repositories - Three sets of metadata are stored for each record
- The harvested (oai_dc) metadata is stored
unchanged - New nzir_admin metadata is generated that lists
- Metadata errors Violations of the Metadata
Guidelines (e.g. No URL) - Metadata warnings Bad practice
- Informational messages For the administrator to
consider - New nzir_internal metadata is generated and used
internally
10Why nzir_internal metadata is cool
- The New nzir_internal metadata includes
- Primary Link - URL of document in the source
repository - Author metadata - Transformed to "Lastname,
Firstnames" format - Subject metadata - Crosswalked into Marsden
Fields - Type metadata - Crosswalked into ePrints Type
Vocabulary - Year metadata - Calculated from Date metadata
- And other fields (See the Metadata Guidelines,
section 4) - This gives us consistent metadata to perform
operations across all the contributing
repositories. - Browse by Marsden code (based on merged subject
metadata) - Filter searches by ePrints Type (based on merged
Type metadata)
11Why nzir_admin metadata is even cooler
- We can calculate the "State of the Nation's
Metadata" at any time - Or calculate the state of a particular
repositorys metadata - We can measure whether metadata quality is
improving (or otherwise) over time - Metadata errors and warning messages are
available to administrators - They can search for errors, or request the full
error set via OAI-PMH - It is there when they need it, without pesky
reminder emails - They can even subscribe to an RSS feed
- KRIS doesnt need a full harvest to get a full
metadata quality report - We only need to do incremental harvests
- Updated (fixed) records will be re-harvested
overnight,and the nzir_admin metadata
automatically updated
