Netscape Composer WS-FTP(Building Blocks to
Publish Informative School Information)

Purpose

• Familiarize School Technology Specialist with
  software available to prepare, publish, and
  transfer files for school web sites. We will be
  using Netscape Communicator with the Composer
  editor to create the pages and WS-FTP Le as the
  software to transfer the pages to the web server.
• These same two pieces of software have been used
  by most BGISD schools for the past two years to
  prepare and display their School Report Card
  information for parents and the community.

Netscape Composer

• We use Netscape Communicator v4.7 within BGISD.
• The Composer editor only exists within
  Communicator, not Navigator.
• To load the current Netscape Communicator v4.7 on
  to your workstation use the following URL
• http//www.b-g.k12.ky.us/STS/Training/Netscape-Com
  poser/cc32e47.exe
• This will install the new browser on your
  workstation.
• Reboot the computer.
• Set proxy settings.
• Using Netscape Composer is very much like using
  any Windows based word processor very easy to
  use.

Beginning Web Page Design

• Web pages/sites present information in a logical
  order for the viewer
• Successful web authors spend a great deal of time
  in preparation prior to creating a web page/site.
• Web authors recommend the use of a story board to
  focus ideas for the web page and to determine
  layout before creation of the web page
• Use the browser help function topics/or Internet
  tutorials to use the tool to the best advantage

• Create a story board (subject My Life)
• Include the information listed below to create a
  three page web site with all pages linked
  together. Use the Internet to find suitable
  images to include on your web page.

• Write one paragraph about your birth include
  one photo of an infant (to represent you)

• Write one paragraph about your participation in
  high school sports. Include one photo of a
  sporting event that you participated in during
  your high school years.

  and school. Include a photo of an activity at
  your school or a photo of the school building.
• Create and insert a table with your
  interpretation of how many teachers, aides, boys
  and girls attend your school
• Include a hyperlink email address for yourself

• Using Netscape Composer is very similar to using
  a word processor
• Using your story board create page 1 of your
  website and save it to the desktop
• Using your story board create page 2 of your
  website and save it to the desktop
• Using your story board create page 3 of your
  website and save it to the desktop
• Check all web pages for background colors, text
  color, position of text, links to other pages,
  email hyperlinks, etc.
