How do we connect young women with ROLE MODELS
in college and industry?
  • Introduction
  • Girls are less likely to participate in computing
    related courses
  • Research shows that 20 of IT professionals are
women 75 of tomorrow's jobs will require use of
computers, while fewer than 33 of participants
in computer courses and related activities are
    girls (http//www.flgirlsgetit.org/)
  • Mentoring can offer young girls a support
structure, experienced role models, and trusted
    advice
  • Conclusions
  • Surveys (pre/post mentoring) will measure overall
    program success, improved technology literacy,
    and improved computing career awareness
  • Program will create Peer Leaders that will act as
    role models for future students
  • STARS SLC students get access to business leaders
    for mentoring and networking
  • FSU IT women develop leadership and mentoring
skills while being exposed to business leaders in
the community for internships and employment

Girls Get IT, Taltech Alliance, and Stars
    Alliance

with FSU computing students and local IT business
    leaders
  • The program provides
  • educational shadowing
  • peer mentoring and leadership
  • social interactions
  • career counseling
  • networking opportunities
  • Impact
  • Create teenage role models that will influence,
motivate, and inspire other classmates to explore
    computing careers
  • Creating awareness of job opportunities for high
    school girls
  • The relationships formed during the program will
    continue beyond high school graduation
  • This will be a feeder program to FSU computing
    majors
  • College mentors will gain access to business
professionals for career advice and job placement
