Data warehouse Business Objects
2
What is a data warehouse?
  • A data warehouse is a structured data collection
of historical data designed for management
    information

Demonstration
Current content data warehouse, subject
areas - donation- organ detail
procurement- balance - waiting lists /
personal organ needs
5
Remark
The following demonstration is meant to give some
insight in the practical usage of the data
warehouse, using Business Objects as a business
intelligence tool.
6
First, this presentation shows how to build a
new query (a new standard report)
7
(No Transcript)
8
The chosen universe consists of a
representation of the database in everyday
language, that is meaningful to a user
9
In the query panel the three subject /
information areas are presented as three
folders Each subject area consists of many
objects, possibly put together in sub-classes.
These objects can be divided in variables (what
information are you interested in) and
dimensions (how do you want to look at these
variables)
10
The subject areas 1) donation gives
information about the number of donors,
differentiated to several dimensions (period of
registration/death, location and donor
information)
11
The subject areas 2) organ detail
procurement gives information about the number
of organ specifications (like left kidney, whole
liver etc.) that are reported, offered,
accepted, procured and transplanted,
differentiated by period, location, organ
specification, phase and donor information)
12
The subject areas 3) balance gives
information about number of donors, organs
or organ specifications and origin and
destination variables, differentiated by period,
location and balance-type
13
When building a query, we have to select the
desired variables and dimensions from one subject
area. In this demonstration a query is made from
the first subject area Donation
14
In order to select the desired objects from the
folder donor information, we open the folder
donation donor
15
The selected objects are presented in the result
objects panel
16
From the location folder, we select the country
(the country of the center which reported the
donor to Eurotransplant)
17
(No Transcript)
18
We use the filter-option to make a selection
from the possible years of registration
19
(No Transcript)
20
We can also build a condition, using other
objects (that are not selected as a part of the
result) when building our own condition, we
can use several operators
21
After selecting the operator, we have to select
an operand, for example items from the list of
values
22
In this case we make a condition to say that we
only want information about the donors that are
used for a transplant
23
To make it possible to analyze the results more
deeply (using the drill down functionality
which will be shown later), we select the two
levels down option
When all the desired objects are selected and the
conditions are set, we can Run the query
24
After choosing Run, the query is sent to the
data warehouse and the results are send back and
placed in a personal data set The data are
presented in a table for changing the
presentation of the data, the Slice and
dice option from Business Objects can be used
25
In the slice and dice panel the presentation of
the data can be changed by moving the objects in
the block structure
26

27
Also we can set (for example) a break on the
year (to break the report in separate
reports per year) and a sum on the number of
donors (to give a total and subtotals per break)

30
The result is an overview of the selected data,
only for the filtered countries (Slovenia is not
shown in this report, because they had no donors
for ET in the reported years)
31
The drill-option can be used for analysis it is
possible to drill through (two levels) on the
location and period dimensions Business Objects
shows the next level of analysis
32
After going down one level on the location
dimension (country -gt region) we can go down
another level to center

35
In order to make it easy to switch to a graphical
presentation of the data, the charts toolbar
is activated here
36
It is also possible to drop the data (objects)
that we dont want in the report directly by
dragging them out of the report
37
The result of dropping the country is the
following report, with only year and donor
type We here select the whole report and choose
the desired chart from the toolbox in order to
get a graphical presentation of the data
38

39
Another chart can easily be selected from the
toolbar
40
So far the demonstration of building a query,
changing style of presentation and analysis The
second part of this demo is based running
standard reports that are made available to the
users of Business Objects
41
Here we select a heart lung balance from the
library with central documents
42
The report is imported including the data that
were in the report when it was put in the
library
43

44
In the query behind this report it is programmed
that the range of months for which the balance
will be made is selected by the user
