WHY DO WE OFFERCURBSIDE COLLECTION?

• Control what is disposed/recycled
• Most rural municipalities have a combination of
  rural and suburban households
• Residents expect some level of service
• Public is more willing to sort at curbside than
  to drive to a recycling depot

TYPE OF COLLECTION OFFERED

• AMRCs informal survey various forms of
  collection is offered throughout rural programs
• Example Northern York Region
• Recycling - weekly or every other week
• Garbage weekly
• Yard waste
• Bulk collection

• Reduction in the number of garbage bags
• Free blue box/green bin (charge for replacement)
• Introduction of SSO
• Increased Yard Waste

PROMOTION EDUCATION

• Open houses, newsletters, collection calendars,
  website, displays in libraries, municipal office
• Most rural municipalities do not have access to
  TV/radio
• Most rely on local newspapers

DIVERSION RATES

• Rural municipalities offering curbside collection
  and offering organics have seen a significant
  increase in their waste diversion.
• Town of Mono -participation study, fall of 2006
  found rural area was just as committed to waste
  reduction as the suburban area. (see hand-out)
