What are the Major Problems in our schools?

• Gangs

• Vandalism
• Substance abuse

There are ways to solve these problems

• Some believe school uniforms are the only way to
  solve these problems
• School board in Long Beach, California
• - Uniforms are the sole factor causing direct
  change in numerous behavioral and academic
  outcomes.-(Brunsma, Rockquemore)

• David Brunsma- University of Alabama
• Kerry Rockquemore- Notre Dame
• Tested the relationships of uniforms on the
  decrease of behavioral problems.
• Variables
• - Absenteeism, behavior, substance abuse,
  pro-school attitudes.
• Results
• -.05 slight relationship between uniforms and
  standardized test results
• - uniform use was not significantly correlated
  with any of the school commitment variables

Other ways to solve problems

• More parental involvement
• Behavioral consultation
• Metal Detectors
• Structured playground activities at a young age

Why School Uniforms?De Bacas Argument

• Wear them in work place
• Teach kids responsibility and leadership

• Only if they go into a field that requires one
  ex medical, military
• Parents should be the first to teach
  responsibility

Other Pro Arguments

• Less peer pressure to buy name brands
• Eliminate discussion of what to wear in the
  morning
• Prevention of gang attire

The Problems with Uniforms

• Expensive and have no use outside of school
• Cut down on students individuality
• We are punishing good children for others crimes
• Freedom of expression limited
