2Kete Horowhenua
- The stories of the district
- as told by its people .
3Once upon a Time ..
In a place far, far away, there was a Kingdom
called Horowhenua.
And that Kingdom had a great Struggle with Many
of its Treasures in Peril from Vermin and Damp
and no Castle to Store them in or Place for
Scholars to come and gaze upon their Loveliness .
4Help us ! The Town People cried ..
- The heritage sector was challenged trying to
balance the conflicting goals of access while
preserving and protecting. - The Councillors were concerned as well. In 2002
they commissioned a research report. Bayly,
Janet. Arts, Culture and Heritage in Horowhenua
Access, Participation, Co-ordination,
Celebration. 2002/03
5Our Manuscripts Overfloweth
- Horowhenua Library Trust had long supported
the historical societies of the District. - Aging volunteers grappled with the backlog of
heritage donations. - A steady stream of donations, including
unsolicited digital images, flowed in as a result
of a small online catalogue of digital images. - Some groups had limited storage facilities, but
others stored collections in a number of barely
suitable venues.
6Our People cant see our Treasures
- A major concern was the lack of access to arts,
cultural and heritage information. - Levin has no museum or archive, and no art
gallery or public exhibition space. - Several small specialised museums found it
difficult to staff regular opening hours.
7The Good Knights gathered at the Round
- Horowhenua Library Trust was asked to formulate a
collective way forward that would maximise
precious resources of finance, expertise, space
and manpower.
8And set out to Find out the Truth ..
- In 2004 the Library Trust carried out an audit of
Arts, Culture and Heritage resources to assess
the extent of the resources currently held in the
District and the long-term 'safety' of these
resources for future generations.
- Findings
- There is a large amount of material in private
hands. - About half may be given to public collections
but half never will. - Most of it is available for loan or copying.
- Lots of information is in peoples heads.
- Everyone knew someone else with more material and
knowledge. - People really do care about arts, cultural and
heritage resources. - Physical space is a real issue.Ransom, Joann
and Blake, Rosalie. Arts, Culture and Heritage
in Horowhenua an audit of resources 2004 prepared
for Horowhenua District Council.
9And Great Thoughts were had
- We had defined the problems.
- There is no ideal solution.
- Which problems could we fix?
- Which solutions were achievable?
- We consulted with focus groups
- Historians
- Genealogists
- Artists
- Students and researchers
- Librarians
- Council staff
10And a French Knight came from across the Oceans
to join the Quest
A Library Science intern came and spent 4 months
researching
- Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 initiatives offshore.
- Licensing options for contributed content.
- Terms and conditions.
- Risk analysis for the Library Trust.
11The Quest
- We defined the achievable
- To get public collections accessible by getting
them online. - To get private collections online too.
- To get the stories out of peoples heads.
- To include both historical and contemporary
material. - To create a virtual exhibition space for
artists and craftspeople. - To inspire a workforce of volunteers.
12And a Pathway Appeared in the Mist
- A collaboratively built digital library of arts,
culture and heritage. - Images, video, audio, documents, weblinks,
encyclopedia-like articles and discussion threads
with related material clustered together. - Contemporary and historical content.
- Had to look gorgeous and be very clever but had
to look simple and behave intuitively. - Self managing and monitoring as far as possible
no layer of library expertise needed. - Open source and open standards with an online
community supporting it.
13And lo! More Treasure Flowed forth
We considered possible sources of records and how
best to add them to the Kete database.

The processes and functions that we required of
Kete. We had to work out from the start exactly
how Kete would work.
16And it looketh glorious indeed
Featured Topics are changed monthly, and users
can search by Keyword or Browse. Online help is
extensive.
17From Chaos
came Order
- Photos are just one type of ITEM. Other ITEM
types are documents, video, audio and weblinks. - Related ITEMS can be gathered together into
clusters by linking them to a TOPIC. - A TOPIC is an article or encyclopedia entry about
any subject, person, place, event or thing that
someone wants to write about.
18Search Results
Search results are sorted by Item type, and
accessed by clicking on the correct tab.
19Topic Pages
Topic pages are created with a text editor.
They can be plain text, or extensively formatted
and illustrated.
Trevor created this page with no assistance from
us.
and then we had to ask him how to use OUR Kete so
successfully !!!

local content.
22and All People had a Part to Play
- Search by keywords, or just browse
- View linked items and topics and what others have
to say. - Register for RSS feeds so you can see changes to
records you are interested in. - Contact other people with similar interests.
- Edit records by typing in tags or keywords to
help other people find an item or topic. - Discuss or comment on Items or topics
- Upload new photos, documents, audio or video
footage, or find and enter relevant websites. - Write new topics or stories
- Link Items together into meaningful subject
clusters
23and New Legends are Born
- A new topic is created by using a
template. Templates help craft the information
by suggesting useful details to include.
24And Drawn together into Wondrous Form

Need a better picture we do not Kete likened to
a dead horse!
with Wonder
- We have had lots of inquiries in the Kete
Project. We plan to release Kete 1.0 later this
year as an Open Source project, complete with - A Configuration wizard for easy download and
installation. - A Skin module so each Kete installation can have
a distinctive look. - An Import wizard to populate a new Kete with
records drawn from a Past Perfect museum
collection management system. - A Kete.net.nz community for users and developers.
