Title: Measurement

1
Measurement
  • Following the GLEs and LEAP Format

2
Types of Questions
  • Perimeter and area
  • Elapsed time
  • Appropriate units of measure
  • Estimation and calculation
  • Using a calendar
  • Comparison

3
Perimeter
  • What is perimeter?
  • What do you need to know to calculate perimeter?
  • What is the perimeter of the following shape

4
Perimeter (Cont.)
  • Which of the following has the same perimeter as
the shape on the previous slide

5
Perimeter (Cont.)
  • If the perimeter of the shape is 25 ft., what is
the length of the right side?

6
Area
  • What is area?
  • What do you need to know to calculate area?
  • You may get an easy question like this
  • What is the area in units?

7
Area (Cont.)
  • This is what you are most likely to see
  • Calculate the area.

8
Area (Cont.)
  • Another way you will see this type of problem
  • The bathroom floor is 12 feet long and 9 feet
wide. What is the area of the bathroom floor?

9
Elapsed Time
  • Basketball practice begins at 330pm. Practice
lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. What time does
    practice end?
  • The movie was over at 930pm. The movie was 2
hours and 30 minutes long. When did the movie
    start?

10
Elapsed Time (Cont.)
  • How much time is there between the end of
Finding Nemo and the beginning of The Little
    Mermaid?

11
Strategies for Elapsed Time
  • Use a clock in the room.
  • Draw a timeline.
  • Add and subtract time, but remember to regroup
using 60 minutes in an hour.

12
Using Area and Elapsed Time
  • Some questions will give you a surface area
that is a fraction of a bigger area. They will
give you a time that it will take for the
original surface area and ask you to calculate or
estimate the time to finish the remaining area.

13
Does this look familiar?
  • Willie was hanging wallpaper on the south wall
in his living room. It took him 20 minutes to
cover this much of the wall. About how long will
it take for Willie to finish the wall? About how
long will it take Willie to wallpaper the entire
    wall?

14
Another way
  • Kathy was painting a wall. She painted this
much in 10 minutes. About how long will it take
    Kathy to finish the wall?

15
Appropriate Units

to fill the bath tub. Which unit is best for him
    to use?

  • 2 feet

17
Calculation
  • Kelly was 2 feet 7 inches tall when she was 3
years old. Since then, she has grown 2 feet 4
inches taller. How tall is Kelly now?
  • How tall would Kelly be now if she had grown 2
feet 6 inches instead of 2 feet 4 inches?

18
