Eastex joins forces with Blundeston Prison
Since discovering Eastex, Michael Balls from
Blundeston Prison has been working closely with
the Suffolk Materials Exchange Coordinator Anna
Martin to find new homes for the sites surplus
reuseable goods. HMP Blundeston have placed over
20 adverts on the exchange detailing information
on their available material that ranges from
plastic cups, plates and cutlery to tables,
chairs and computers. To date HMP Blundeston has
been supplying S.O.L.D (Special Objectives for
the Local Disabled) in Lowestoft, Suffolk with 1
tonne of wooden off cuts a month. S.O.L.D operate
a workshop environment for physically and sensory
disabled people, producing woodwork, art clay and
textile products for own and public use. The
Prison is also working with EBC Woodfuels, in
Attleborough, Norfolk providing 1 tonne of wood
shavings every 6 weeks as a source for their wood
fuel products. To date HMP Blundeston have
diverted nearly 60 tonnes of items and material
from entering landfill.
It is great to have such an active and
enthusiastic member on the Suffolk Materials
Exchange. Michael is always keen to find second
homes for the sites surplus items and is
currently working with a number of voluntary and
community organisations within the Waveney area
to do so. The added bonus here is that a lot of
these exchanges are on-going arrangements
providing local organisations with sustainable
sources of materials. Anna Martin, Eastex
Suffolk Coordinator
HMP Blundeston have also carried out a number of
Exchanges providing items such as computer
keyboards, mouses, plastic buckets, platform
weighing scales, wooden planars, paper, card, a
gym horse and even a large wooden throne chair to
local community groups and individuals.
