Ohio
6BAHEEs STEM Philosophy
The problem in the 21st century is given the
rate of change the content is changing faster
than you can memorize it, which means that youre
going to need to be able to solve problems and
not memorize answers to static questions. So,
the fundamental skill I think is learning the
process of thinking. You dont need to learn what
to think. Jerry Jurgensen, CEO, Nationwide
7BAHEEs Portfolio of Initiatives
- Work with partners to establish STEM schools and
STEM Programs of Excellence. - Use quality data to help state policymakers
understand the right investments that will work
to increase the yield of BA and BS degrees in
STEM. - Pursue a professionally-run marketing campaign to
increase college enrollment and degree attainment
in Ohio.
8STEM Schools Programs of Excellence
- BAHEE serves as a principal partner on the Ohio
STEM Learning Network (OSLN). - Managed by Battelle, the OSLN aims to connect and
develop platform schools across Ohio.
9Using Quality Data to Maximize STEM Degree
Production
- BAHEE STEM Undergraduate Pipeline Proof of
Concept Study - Nine Ohio institutions of higher education
- Preliminary findings reveal
- A funnel effect that limits the number of STEM
graduates. - 1 in 7 students who enter as STEM majors switch
to non-STEM majors in their sophomore year. - A students overall GPA in the Fall term was the
most statistically significant and positive
factor in determining student persistence in
STEM. - A student who takes more STEM courses is more
likely to continue in STEM for the next year than
a student with similar grades who takes fewer
STEM courses.
