Title: Needs of Living Things

1
2-3
  • Needs of Living Things
  • The 5 Essentials
  • Energy- Food and Water- Oxygen- Living Space
    Proper Temperature

2
Energy-
  • - The sun provides energy for the producers
    (plants)
  • - The producers provide energy for the consumers
    (animals)
  • -The primary source of energy for the food chain
    is the Sun

3
Food and Water
  • Food is needed for
  • 1. A source of energy
  • 2. Supplies the building blocks for Growth,
    Development and Repair
  • 3. Different organisms need different foods

4
Food and Water
  • Water is 65 or more of our body. It is needed
    for
  • 1. Transportation of dissolved materials so
the cells can get what they need.
  • 2. Water is needed for the process of
    metabolism
  • 3. Water of needed for the elimination of
    wastes
  • 4. Water is needed to help hold the cells
    shape
  • 5. Water is needed by plants as one of the two
    raw materials for photosynthesis.
  • CO2 H2O ? Sugar O2

5
Oxygen
  • Oxygen is needed for respiration
  • Sugar O2 ? Energy CO2 H2O ENERGY
  • This happens in all cells (plant or animal).
  • The energy is needed so the cells can do their
    jobs.

6
Living Space
  • Every organism has its own territory with a
limited amount of food, water and protection.
  • Organisms develop ways to protect their
territory, and compete for their needs.
  • Survival of the fittest. Only the strong survive
the struggle to survive the competition of
getting enough food, water and shelter.

7
Proper Temperature
  • Homeostasis- keeping conditions inside the body
constant even though the outside environment
    changes.

8
Proper Temperature Cold Blooded Animals-
  • Cold Blooded Animals- the body temperature
    changes with the environment.
  • If hot, they lower their body temp in the shade
If cold, they warm themselves in the sun.
  • Homeostasis by the location in the environment,
    not from inside the organism
  • Examples Insects, amphibians, and reptiles,
    fish, and more.

9
Proper Temperature Warm blooded Animals
  • Warm blooded Animals- keep a constant body
    temperature.
  • If hot, the organism will sweat, flutter or pant,
to cause evaporation which lowers the body temp.
  • If cold, the organism will burn more fuel during
respiration to release more energy and lift the
body temperature. The organism will also
constrict blood flow to the outer parts of the
body so the core has more blood to warm itself.
  • Examples Horses, Birds, Cats, Humans, and more.
