Study Design
  • Prospective study for axial length measurement
    comparison between PalmScan IOL Master.
  • 74 consecutive eyes of patients for presbyopia
    correcting IOLs between January 19, 2007
    October 17, 2007.
  • Three eyes were eliminated-could not be measured
    with IOL Master V 3.02 software 5.02 software.
    One eye was successfully measured with V. 5.02
    when it could not be measured with V 3.02. 47
    eyes were done with V 3.02 software and 24 eyes
    with V 5.02 software.

Patient characteristics
  • 36 pts., one unilateral
  • Average age 68.8, range 50 to 84
  • 38 female eyes, 33 male eyes
  • 4 Refractive Lens Exchanges
  • 67 for presbyopia correcting IOL

Technique
  • IOL Master measurements were taken by two
    experienced technicians.
  • All immersion measurements were taken by the
    author with the patient in a supine position
    using the Micro Medical PalmScan handheld A-scan.

Eye characteristics
  • 35 right eyes 36 left eyes
  • Range 21.38 mm to 28.91 mm
  • One psuedophakic eye, 8 post LASIK eyes-3 also
    post PPV
  • One post PPV w/buckle

Results
  • Range of axial lengths 21.38 mm to 28.91 mm-IOL
    Master
  • Average axial length 24.53 mm standard deviation
    1.82 mm-IOL Master
  • Average difference in axial length between the
    PalmScan and IOL Master
  • 0.022 mm with standard deviation of 0.10 mm and R
    coef. of 0.998
  • 4.1 of eyes could not be measured with the IOL
    Master version 5.02 software.

Results
  • Correlation Coefficient 0.998

Conclusion
  • Axial length measurements by the PalmScan
    immersion ultrasound is comparable to the IOL
    Master and can be used when the IOL Master can
    not get an axial length measurement.
  • Immersion was needed in 4.1 (3/74).
  • Immersion units are still need even if you have
    an IOL Master.
