- This is who we are and what we believe in.
- The mission of H.C.D.S. is to support the
personal, academic and social development of
students by - Providing a welcoming, confidential integrated
service which respects the individuality, dignity
and diversity of those who come to us - Accepting feedback from the community
- Opening a way for students to avail themselves of
the richness of a university experience.

- This means that as a peer educator with
H.C.D.S, you must respect our mission by - Holding in confidence any information you hear
about other students, unless you are concerned
about self-harm or potential harm to others - Behave in a professional manner walk the
talk. - Be familiar with the following services and
resources we offer so you can refer students if
necessary.
5About Health Services
Funded by Student fees(60) and by OHIP (40)
Staffed by 6.5 Full Time Equivalent (FTE)
doctors and 5 FTE nurses, the Health Educator
thats Diane! as well as many admin staff.
of visits per year 46,000!
6Health Services provides medical care from
AIDS to Zits!
Students can come for anything they would see a
family doctor for.
Evening clinics on Mondays and Wednesdays during
the school year
Travel immunization information and counselling
On call service after hours and weekends from
September through April

- Peer Health Educators (thats some of you!)
facilitate the adoption of healthy lifestyle
behaviours and attitudes in many ways. - As health advocates for a healthy campus, you can
look for opportunities to influence campus
policies and programs. - In 2003-2004 you helped reach 8500 students!
8About Counselling Services
Funding through the University Budget
Staffing 21 part time and full time counsellors
(some are psychologists, social workers, M.Ed)
1500 Visits a year
9Counselling Services
- Offers Personal Counselling for a range of
emotional and psychological problems, for
example - Anxiety
- Depression
- Eating Disorders
- Relationship Issues
- Academic Issues
- Also Cross Cultural Counselling for International
Students - And Crisis Counselling a walk-in service for
immediate problems
Also is involved in Consultation with residence,
academic departments and campus organizations
like the Mental Health Awareness Committee.
10Learning Strategies Development
- This is a division of Counselling Services which
includes - Academic Counselling for students experiencing
academic difficulty. Students can have a Learning
Assessment done and instruction of specific
skills with a counsellor. - Learning Strategies Workshops offered each term
as a way of improving academic skills such as
time management, studying for exams etc.

Assistants Do Well!
- Peer Learning Assistants (thats some of you!)
facilitate the adoption of academic success
strategies to Queens students in many ways. - You act as learning resources and role models for
your peers. - In 2003-2004 you reached over 2000 students!

Serves and supports students with physical, motor
and learning disabilities including ADD,
Acquired Brain Injury, mental health
disabilities
Funding through Ontario Government
Staffing Clinical director, disability advisor,
learning disability strategist, admin staff

Assessment of Learning Disabilities
Setting up Accommodations e.g. note-takers,
extra time for exams
Academic and Personal Support with
consultation with a Learning Strategist and
instruction in adaptive computer technology
14Peer Mentor Program
- A newly expanded program to support students
registered with Disability Services, or referred
by a counsellor. - Mentors are trained as coaches, providing one on
one assistance to these students, emphasizing
survival skills and offering academic support.

- As you can see, as a Peer Educator you give of
your time and talent to all 3 divisions of
H.C.D.S. - You are effective communicators of our vision.
- You are, (or will be!) well trained, credible and
productive team members of H.C.D.S. - Because of you, we are able to reach thousands of
students.
