Title: Status of USGS Geomagnetism Observatories

1
Status of USGS Geomagnetism Observatories
Carol A. Finn and Alan M. Berarducci
Introduction The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
Geomagnetism Program currently operates 14
magnetic observatories across the United States
and its territories and covering a wide range of
latitude and longitude. Current efforts are
focused on improving operational baseline
stability through increased monitoring and
through facility improvements.
  • Data Acquisition
  • and Transmission Improvements
  • Utilizing magworm software to record and
transmit 1-min data in realtime over the Internet
  • Implemented backup capability via ftp for Air
    Force Weather Agency (AFWA) operations
  • Implemented automatic fail-over from
    GOES-transmitted data to Internet-transmitted
    data
  • Improved capacity and reliability of magworm
buffers to minimize data losses due to comm
    interruptions
  • A Geomag DevLab was established behind ANSS
firewall for improved security protections and to
    isolate development from operations
  • USGS observatory data files now being
transmitted to INTERMAGNET web site every 12
    minutes
  • Baseline Improvements
  • Slow progress is being made in improving
observatory baselines two examples shown below
