2Black Silver. The story behind the designs
3Black Silver.
ASP8024 and derivatives The hybrid Class A
technology used in the ASP8024 is the result of
decades of development and evolution of circuit
design. Over the last 30 years, Dearden has
continued to embrace newly available components
and IC technology to produce products that
represent the ultimate in audio perfection. All
the silver faced products follow this basic
philosophy and are derived from the Silver
hybrid design.
Black Series A Back to the future approach to
design utilising classic 1970s discrete, Class A,
transformer balanced circuitry..David Dearden
revisited some of his earlier designs and added a
host of creative features for adding colouration
and warmth.

5Black Series is a transformer balanced, Class A
design that has its roots in the classic David
Dearden designs from the 1970s prior to the
advent of IC technology. Check out the circuit
boards, there are no ICs, only traditional
discrete components. If youre looking for that
classic British analogue console sound, this is
what Black Series is all about. Added to this,
Black Series utilises a number of classic
producers techniques originally developed on
large format consoles and outboard units, all
within a flexible modular system.
6Black Pre
The first module well look at is the Black Pre.
Imagine the front end of a 1970s discrete
console, with the advantage of increased
headroom, low noise and a short signal path and
this forms the basis for this design. The icing
on the cake is the HMX - Harmonic Sculpting
feature.Using a unique Solid State Triode design
and behaving much like a Tube Triode design,
varying amounts of even order harmonic content
can be added to the signal, creating a rich, full
sound.

9Black Comp
Moving on to the Black Comp, we chose an optical
compressor, giving the most flexibility with a
wide range of signal sources. The compressor
utilises a unique combination of feed-forward and
feed-back signal sensing. This provides the fast
response time associated with VCA compressors,
whilst retaining the non-linear compression curve
much loved with optical compressors. The idea of
the Overcomp function is to recreate the
console talkback compression effect used on many
classic drum sessions and heavily-compressed
vocal tracks. As an example, try this on a drum
mix or a room mic and the results are just
stunning. The Smooth button Switches the
compressor to dual time constant mode for overall
mix bus compression, although this works very
nicely on single source material too.Check this
function out and youll see why we called it
Smooth.

12Black EQ
Glo comes from an old dynamic EQ trick with
analogue consoles. You split a channel, then
boost the low end on one of the splits, compress
this and then blend the splits together again,
adding low end but retaining the tightness of the
signal. Glo allows you to experiment with just
one button push. If you like the overall EQ
curve achieved with the 4 bands, the Tilt
allows you to shift the overall tonal balance
around 1kHz. Brightening the signal and
attenuating the low end in one position and
warming the low end and attenuating the top end
in the other position. A great tool for sitting a
part in the mix or for a basic and repeatable EQ
for recording vocals and acoustic guitars.

15Black ADC is
- A no-nonsense converter with up to 192kHz
sampling frequency at 24 bit Resolution - This converter introduces Audients unique Low
Jitter PLL circuitry, allowing the integrity of
the word clock to be maintained when synced to
an external clock - The ADC module features AES, SPDIF and Toslink
outputs, and a 12 segment level display with
0dBFS and Over LEDS. - Discrete inputs allow the module to be used as a
stand alone converter.

18The Black Time Machine
Is Audients precision Word Clock generator
which ensures high performance master clock for
external devices locked to it. The module feeds
the Black Series clock bus with Word Clock signal
and also feeds Word Clock to the rear BNC for
external transmission.

20The BR10 rack has space for 10 modules. These can
be mixed and matched in any configuration,
anything from 10 mic pres, to a stereo voice
channel with A/D converters or even 18 channels
of A/D with master word clock generator.
Compressors can be linked in any multiple to
provide stereo or multi-channel
compressors. Black Series has a console style
PSU to provide the high voltage and power draw
needed to run the Solid State Triode design.
Modern High Voltage designs also increase the
headroom beyond what was possible with the
original class A, discrete systems.
21The BB4 Black Box has space for 4 modules. Like
with the BR10, these can be mixed and matched in
any configuration. A popular configuration is
Pre, Comp and EQ to provide a voice channel, with
the last space being free to take the ADC module.
As with the BR10, compressors can be linked to
provide stereo or multi-channel compressors.
22In summary, Black Series provides classic console
style transformer input, Class A, discrete
analogue modules in a flexible rack system. Like
some other well known systems, Black Series helps
you create that classic analogue sound. Its
strength lies with the high headroom possible and
the addition of a host of producers features
like HMX, Overtone, Glo, Tilt, Smooth and
Overcomp. Black Series also has the ability to
integrate analogue modules with high quality A/D
conversion and a master clock in one system, to
provide a complete front end solution for the
professional user.
