Title: Quality of role definitions

1
Feedback on argumentation skills as displayed in
Individual Role Prep for Conservation Crisis
  • Quality of role definitions
  • Hypothesis
  • Connect evidence to hypothesis
  • Explaining your stance

2
Defining your role
  • Can help you argue against other roles more
    effectively
  • Knowing the similarities and differences b/w your
position and other roles can help you
  • Form effective coalitions
  • Address different motives more effectively
because you understand why they have different
    motives
  • you can better argue against or anticipate
counter arguments of each of the different roles

3
Example listing similarities differences
between roles
  • e.g. Factory workers conservationists
  • Similarities don't want pollution,
  • Difference factory workers want Parsons to stay
    in town

4
Hypothesis
  • Your counter hypothesis should directly negate
    your pro-hypothesis
  • E.g., when preparing for your role in the
conservation ex you should have primarily focused
on anticipating counter arguments (weaknesses) to
your own position rather than focusing on
weaknesses of other positions (i.e., countering
    other roles pro arguments).
  • You should focus on why your position is still
    valid despite its weaknesses

5
Connecting evidence to hypothesis
  • Present relevant research
  • Present evidence to support your hypothesis
  • Find counter evidence for your hypothesis
  • Some only found evidence to counter other roles
arguments and not evidence against own hypothesis
  • All relevant facets of each position

6
Consider all relevant facets to your
position e.g., Conservationists research
  • Address anti-pollution laws
  • Negative impact of socially irresponsible
    behavior on an organizations image
  • Health
  • Point out how the effect of PCBs on health of
    current future generation should affects
factory worker, dept of environment, unemployed
    male and Parsons executive.

7
Explaining the research
  • Explain how the research
  • Supports your position AND
  • Counters others arguments against your position
  • Identify flaws in your own argument and explain
how your claim is still valid despite the flaws

8
Improving Argumentation Skills
  • Definitions
  • Quality of Hypothesis formation
  • Appropriate counter hypothesis
  • Research Quality
  • Supporting the hypothesis counter hypothesis
    with good relevant evidence
  • Explaining how why the evidence supports
  • Hypothesis
  • Counterhypothesis
