OREDA
2
WHAT OREDA IS
  • A project organization with 10 oil companies as
    members (as per January 2001)
  • A comprehensive databank with Exploration
Production (EP) reliability data collected from
  • Offshore topside and subsea equipment
  • Onshore E P equipment
  • A forum for exchange and development of
reliability methods and knowhow within the oil
    and gas industry

3
GENERAL OREDA OBJECTIVES
  • Improve safety
  • by providing experience and data on risks
  • Improve reliability and availability
  • by use of reliability data to select most
reliable equipment and configuration, and reveal
    weak designs for future improvement
  • Improve maintenance effectiveness
  • by using failure data to refine maintenance
    strategies
  • Enhance industry reputation
  • by demonstrating a high degree of understanding
    of equipment performance and characteristics

4
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
  • Collect and exchange operating experience in a
    common format
  • Promote reliability engineering in E P projects
  • Develop a reference for the collection and
analysis of reliability data in the oil and gas
    industry
  • Develop cost-efficient data collection methods
    and tools
  • Feed back operating experience to the equipment
    manufacturers
  • Co-operate with other organizations and research
institutes on data collection and analysis

OREDA HISTORY
7
ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Common standard and references for reliability
    information (e.g. ISO 14 224) issued July 1999
  • Comprehensive databank with offshore reliability
    data
  • Reliability Data Handbooks (3) with compiled data
  • Development of guidelines and software for data
    collection and analysis
  • Increased cost-efficiency in data collection
    (automated data collection)
  • Enhancement and exchange of knowledge in
    reliability technology through research projects,
    courses and workshops
  • Cooperation between OREDA, users and
    manufacturers
  • Enhanced credibility of availability, risk and
    maintenance analyses by comprehensive
    reliability statistics

8
RESULT OF QUESTIONNAIRE ON NEED FOR RELIABILITY
DATA IN RAM ANALYSES (OREDA companies)
  • 82 consider lack of reliability data a problem
    in RAM studies
  • 77 use databases as main source for RAM analyses
  • 71 spend 10 - 30 of time during RAM analyses
to get hold of sufficient reliability data
  • These advantages of OREDA were emphasized
  • large populations
  • high quality data
  • easy access to relevant data
  • standardization of concept and formats

THE NEED FOR DATA
14
APPLICATION OF DATA
  • Availability studies
  • Availability estimates
  • Design optimization
  • Equipment selection
  • Risk analysis
  • Estimate probabilities of critical events
  • Estimate survival time for safety-critical items
  • LCC
  • Benchmarking
  • Maintenance planning and optimization
  • RCM
  • Spare parts requirements
  • Analyze reliability characteristics
  • Reveal weak designs/design improvements
  • Operations
  • Condition monitoring
  • Trend monitoring

OREDA SOFTWARE MODULES

USE OF OREDA DATA - Case A
  • Application Overpressure protection
  • Installation Offshore gas platform
  • Case Tie-in of new gas fields could result in
cold temperature problems on existing blowdown
and flare system. In addition overpressure may
occur from large export compressors. A new system
according to API specification was originally
    planned
  • Solution An alternative instrument based
overpressure protection system on export gas
manifold to control both cold gases and the
compressors was devised. Analysis proved this to
be safer than the API design
  • Cost saving US 30 Million
  • Analysis Risk and Reliability study
  • Use of OREDA data Analysis based on OREDA data
convinced the operator, and subsequently the
authorities, as to the confidence of the devised
    solution

18
USE OF OREDA DATA - Case B
  • Application Oil export
  • Installation Offshore oil and gas platform
  • Case Tie-in of a new field to an existing
platform. The new euipment module includes
separators, compressors, gas turbine etc. A 2 x
100 oil export system was originally planned.
  • Solution A 1 x 100 oil export system was
selected consisting mainly of a booster pump and
an export pump. Estimated production availability
    reduced by 0.4
  • Cost saving Cost NOK 50 millions. Weight 20
    tons of equipment,
  • 40 tons bulk. More space available.
  • Analysis RAM assessment
  • Use of OREDA data OREDA Phase III pump data used
as input to the RAM assessment
