plutonium from 1944-1989 - Peak employment was during initial site

- Demolishing facilities and cleaning up waste
sites near the Columbia River and across the
Hanford Site - Stabilizing and preparing nuclear materials for
shipment off the site - Cleaning up and monitoring contaminated
groundwater - Packaging, shipping, and disposing of radioactive
waste - Keeping the site safe and secure

- Shrink active area of cleanup to 75 square miles
by 2015 - Provides more near-term focus on finishing
cleanup along Columbia River - Reduces annual infrastructure costs
- At completion, will shift full-scale cleanup
resources to center of Hanford - Still plenty of cleanup work to do in central
Hanford after 2015

- Focus of 1.96 billion in Recovery Act funds for
Hanford - Create/save jobs

- Projects identified will focus on accelerating
cleanup of soil and groundwater, transportation
and disposal of waste, cleanout and demolition of
former weapons complex facilities, and building
infrastructure to support tank waste treatment
