Title: Models of Memory 2

1
Models of Memory 2
  • How psychologists try and explain how memory is
organised and works within the brain.

2
Baddeley Hitch
  • The working memory model

3
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • This model involves the idea of a multi-store
    STM.
  • Proposes a short-term or working memory which
is used while working on things.

5
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • This working memory consists of three components
  • Central executive a modality-free component. It
has a vary limited capacity and is like attention.

6
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • Articulatory-phonological loop the loop is
divided into a phonological store, which is
directly concerned with speech perception, and an
articulatory process, which is linked to speech
    production.

7
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • Visuo-spatial sketch pad (sometimes called a
scratch pad) this specialised for spatial and /
or visual coding, a kind of writing pad for
    visual data

8
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • Most is known about the articulatory loop. When
asked to recall sets of 5 words in correct order
were able to remember short words easier than
long words participants were able to recall as
many words as they could read out loud in 2
    seconds

9
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • Capacity of articulatory loop is determined by
how long it takes to perform something.

10
Baddeley HitchThe working memory model
  • What is the articulatory-phonological used for?
  • Used in reading difficult material, making it
easier for readers to retain information about
the order of words in text.
