GEOMATICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
16
Now for the details!
  • Two lectures per week with Engies and Geos
    combined
  • One 2 hour practical/lab
  • Generally field-work based
  • Later in ECR labs
  • Continual assessment, a 2 hour exam during the
    examination period
  • More material at subject web site

17
Details
  • For the Engies terminal, but can do 101
  • For the Geos, leads into Surveying 1
  • With a residential field course at the end of the
    year
  • Intended to give fundamental skills with
    instruments, with some background knowledge

18
Syllabus
  • See handout
  • About half the course is data collection
  • The remainder covers other aspects of Geomatics
  • Designed to give a good overview
  • Selected Guest Speakers and other Geomatics Staff
  • Some computer based assignments
  • http//www.geom.unimelb.edu.au/subjects/451_1998/1

Prac Reports
  • Standard scientific report format
  • See handout
  • Preferably word processed
  • but not a marking criterion
  • Preferably in a binder of some kind
  • For later revision!
  • Must contain the Prac Declaration
  • When working in teams, must also contain the team
    evaluation

21
Prac Reports
  • Assessed against criteria that include the
    correct formatting, grammar and spelling
  • Will be returned within a week
  • I will go over the requirements in detail before
    each prac

22
Examination
  • Worth 35
  • Still a valuable form of assessment
  • 2 hours duration
  • Held during examination period
  • (fairly predictable, and past exams will soon be
available on the subject web site as well as
    on-line at the Library)

23
Safety and You
  • The Department takes EHS seriously
  • All University rules apply for our units
  • Please read the sheet on the use of equipment
  • High visibility vests are to be worn when working
    in University Square
  • Know where to evacuate and assemble

24
This Week
  • There is a practical session for both the Geos
    and the Engies this week
  • Everybody will assemble on the roof of this
building for group formation at the time
    scheduled for their prac class
  • Geos will also have their photos taken
  • Field pracs start next week
