Motivation
Architecture
Current home monitoring systems do not prioritize
the home owner in terms of notification. In
addition, many households are not equipped with
wired sensors. Hence, no one may know about the
emergency until it is too late.

• Objectives
• Provide low-cost emergency notification to home
  owners.
• Allow home owners to have more control over
  emergencies.

Results

• Initial set of experiments
• Prototype completed with some fault tolerance
• Sensors were calibrated to minimize false
  negatives
• Smoke sensor adapts to the initial environment
• Motion sensor uses an absolute reference
• Enabled home owners to receive emergency
  notification (fire burglary) via SMS

• Initial usability studies
• Low-cost sensors are not very sensitive. This is
  a problem for detecting motion.
• The delivery time from SMS Gateway to cell phone
  varies from 0 to 2 min.
