Title: The Cambrian Explosion
1The Cambrian Explosion
2One of the mysteries of geology is that the
fossil record shows an enormous increase in the
diversity of life forms in the lower part of the
Cambrian strata dated at of about 600 million
years ago. These organisms do not appear to have
any ancestors.
3Richard Dawkins, author of The Blind Watchmaker,
says on page 239, the Cambrian strata of rocks,
vintage about 600 million years, are the oldest
in which we find most of the major invertebrate
groups. And we find many of them already in an
advanced state of evolution, the very first time
they appear. It is as though they were just
planted there, without any evolutionary history.
4Charles Darwin was aware of this problem when he
said, The case at present must remain
inexplicable and may be truly urged as a valid
argument against the views here entertained.
