Problems of Database Growth

• Rapid growth of 1.25GB per month has caused
  negative impact on performance.
• Archiving of large amounts of rare-used data
  which was causing unacceptable response times for
  users.
• Declines in performance.
• Corporations fail to meet certain service levels
  as a result of degrading performance, reduced
  availability, lack of technology
  upgrades, etc.

Effects and Solutions to the Problem

• It is difficult to select and remove partial
  (older, unnecessary) database data.
• Some random data that are not needed to close
  transactions may still be needed for reporting
  about them.
• Certain countries require corporations to keep
  data for a certain period. Such as U.S.A 3
  yrs Italy 5 yrs Brazil 10 yrs and China
  15 yrs.

Laws and Regulations

• Sarbanes-Oxley Act 0f 2002 section 302 -requires
  the CEO and CFO of a company to certify the
  accuracy of annual and quarterly reports. And
  data to support this certification must be kept.
• SEC Rule 17-A obligate companies involved in
  securities trading to sets out specific data
  retention rules and requirements

  procedures for data in doctors offices,
  hospitals, and health related organizations

Data Storage guidelines

• Convince senior management and end users of the
  importance of data archiving and of the need for
  an approved data arching policy.
• Create a plan for implementing the archiving
  policy-ensure the plan prioritizes business
  requirements ahead of disk space reduction
  requirements.
• Secure and back up the data archive.
• Ensure the policy addresses legal requirements
  for all countries involved.
