    the children) are the victims.
  • 3-4 million women a year are beaten by their
    husbands in the States
  • Every 15 seconds someone is being domestically
    violated
  • Often takes place at home
  • Main reason for injury and death for women in the
    US

  • Elder abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional
    abuse, and exploitation, negligence, and
abandonment that causes harm to the victim
  • Often the victims of elder abuse are dependent on
their perpetrator for their basic needs
  • 551, 011 elders (people who 60) were victims of
abuse during the year 1998 in the USA
  • 2/3 of the perpetrators were the victims grown
children and spouses, and the abusers are just as
likely to be women as men
  • Neglect is the most common form of elder abuse
  • Elders are more vulnerable to abuse as many are
not as social as they once were, and many have
    mental impairments (for example Alzheimer's)
  • It is estimated that around 5 million elders are
    abused every year

10
Why it Happens
  • Some reasons contributing to physical violence
    are
  • that women for many centuries have been
considered interferer, and some husbands feel
that it is in their right to beat their wife
  • Physical violence was witnessed at home while the
    offender was growing up
  • The offender is unable to control their anger
  • The offender wants to dominate

11
True? or False?
  • True
  • Many times it is hard for the victim to leave as
they are afraid of putting themselves in more
    danger
  • People are abused in all social classes,
    ethnicity, religion
  • Women who are abused range from uneducated to
    have a PhD
  • The violence IS controllable saying it isnt is
    an excuse
  • Most perpetrators seem reasonable and respectable
    outside the family
  • Not all violent men are uneducated, many are
    professionals
  • False
  • People blow family violence out of proportion
(make it worse than It seems)
  • It is the victims fault
  • That it is easy for the victim to leave
  • It will get better if you wait out the problem
  • Only people in lower social classes are abused
  • All or most women in violent relationships are
    uneducated
  • Children need their father, even if he is abusive
