EME 105 Intro to Engineering
  • Week 05 Lecture B
  • Teamwork and Good Citizenship

2
Teaming and Expectations
  • Do you ever think about the intrapersonal
dynamics or the expectations other members have
of you when working on a group project?
  • People may come into a group interaction with
different expectations about what their roles and
    responsibilities are or should be.

3
Class Discussion
  • Why do you think different people have different
expectations about how they participate in a
    group activity?

4
Activity 1
  • Take out two sheets of paper. On the top of one
    sheet write

Personal expectations of myself when given a
teaming assignment
  • Take 2 minutes and make a list of your own
expectations about your role as a team member.

5
Activity 2
  • Take the other sheet of paper. On the top of it
    write

My expectations of other members when working
with them on a team assignment
Take 2 minutes and make a list of your own
expectations about other members contributions to
your team
6
Summary of Teaming Expectations
  • You are to share with the class these
    characteristics that you identified.

7
Individual Assignment
  • You are to make a list of the 6 most important
characteristics that members of a team should
    exhibit.

a) Do it by yourself on the back of your sheet
of paper.
b) Share characteristics with the class
8
Characteristics should measure ?
  • We would like the characteristics to
  • --measure each individuals level of
    participation
  • --measure of each individuals effort
  • --measure of each individuals sense of
    responsibility to achieving team goals.
  • -- not be a measure of a team members academic
    ability.

9
Agree on Team Characteristics
  • Class come to a consensus on the top 8.
  • Once characteristics are identified,it is
possible to develop an assessment form for use to
rate the performance of the team members.
  • What purpose does this form serve?

10
Team Citizenship Form
  • On the Rating Team Citizenship form fill in the
eight characteristics you have selected as
    responsibilities.
  • Also fill in your name and the date at the top of
    the form.

11
Team Citizenship Qualifiers
  • Excellent
  • Very good
  • Satisfactory
  • Ordinary
  • Marginal
  • Deficient
  • Unsatisfactory
  • Superficial
  • No show.

12
Team Citizenship....The Skit
  • Please welcome the members of a recent team
    activity
  • Bill.... Phil...
  • Jill and Will.
  • Fill in their names under the team members list
on the Rating Team Citizenship form

13
Team Citizenship Assessment
  • You will be asked to list the strengths of each
character and the improvements that need to be
    made for each character
  • After listing the characters strengths and
improvements, you will be asked to rate
the citizenship of each fictitious character.
  • Rating means Excellent, Very good,
    Satisfactory, Ordinary, Marginal, Deficient ,
    Unsatisfactory, Superficial, or No show.

14
Let the skit begin
  • As you listen to the scenario, you should
individually be writing down your assessment of
the characters strengths and need for
    improvement.
  • Try to emphasize improvements in a positive way.
  • You can feel free to ask questions about the
characters as the scenario is read.

15
Jill's Story
  • Let me tell you about Bill
  • Bill is the kind of student who was struggling to
maintain a C in the course.
  • He often asked for explanations during the team's
sessions, offered ideas when he could, always
showed up for meetings, and prepared beforehand
to the best of his ability.
  • He is friendly and willing to work.
  • Oh and one more thing about Bill you probably
dont know is that he ....

16
Will's Story
  • Let me tell you about Phil.
  • Phil missed a number of meetings with no excuse,
and when he did show up it was almost always
without having even looked at the assignment.
  • He contributed very little during the meetings,
was late to one meeting because no one told him
the meeting time, and missed a meeting because
his alarm clock didnt go off.
  • He didnt bring his part of that weeks work
because he figured that I would do it on my own
    way anywaywhich I did.
  • In my view, Phil is .....

17
Bill's Story
  • Let me tell you about Will
  • Will is very bright, usually first to figure out
solutions to difficult problems, but not
    particularly cooperative.
  • He tended to just work out the solutions and
discourage attempts of others to contribute.
  • He was reluctant to spend time explaining things
to the others, and was particularly impatient
    with my questions.
  • He doesnt like to explain things that he thinks
    are obvious.
  • I think that Will ......

18
Phils Story
  • Let me tell you about Jill
  • Jill is not as bright as Will but shes super
    responsible.
  • She spent a lot of time giving one-on-one help to
    Bill and me.
  • However, after a while she didn't seem as willing
to help me as much as she did earlier in the
    quarter.
  • She's always on time to meetings and often
volunteers to call and remind everyone (I
remember her calling me a couple of time) when
    the next meeting is.
  • You probably don't know this about Jill, but she
    ....

19
Following the skit
  • Complete the strength/Improvements form for each
    team member.
  • Beside the team members name at the bottom of
the citizenship form rate their citizenship
    within this group.

20
Class Discussion
  • Come to a consensus on the rating given to each
    member on the team.

21
Expectation of a team member
  • A Team Member-- is expected to participate
fully in defining the problem, solving it, and
    documenting the solution.

    project.

  • -- Keeps the team focused on the task
  • -- Ensures that members do their followup work.

    conflicts

    recognition for their contributions.
  • Summarizer
  • -- Periodically summarizes what the team has done
so far and the plan for completing the task.

    and decisions are reasoned out.
  • Reflector
  • -- Monitors the process rather than the task.
  • -- Provides feedback on the teams process and
    progress.
  • -- Gives guidance to leadership.

find the meeting place at the correct time and to
perform the tasks for which the meeting is called
  • Make sure that the location has sufficient
    resources (chairs, whiteboard, overhead, network
    connections, phones, ..)

27
Team LeaderResponsibility At and During a
