The development of the handbook
  • The Handbook of Procedures for the Management of
    Pupils with Health Care Needs in Educational
    Establishments
  • Aims
  • to set out clear processes and expectations for
    all staff and parents in the implementation of
    HSP4
  • to develop a consistent approach and provide
    resources to support establishments to meet the
    health care needs of children and young people
  • to develop a CPD programme which is manageable,
    proportionate and supports staff to meet
    identified needs

Approaches and Resources
  • All the health care plans, flow charts, etc. have
    been consulted on and agreed by a wide range of
    health care professionals, including
    paediatricians, nursing staff and charity
    organisations
  • The resources were further developed at pilot
    sites in educational establishments across the
    city over a 2 year period
  • Resources include a pathway flow chart, flow
    charts and schools health care plans for specific
    conditions, recording sheets for medication held
    on the premises and CPD

  • ASL(5) Severe allergies, asthma and epilepsy
    awareness management in educational
    establishments
  • ASL(5) Diabetes management in educational
    establishments
  • On-site and bespoke courses for other needs e.g.
    management of emergency medication in epilepsy,
    cystic fibrosis
  • Guidance on recommendations for attendance on
    courses

Distribution Support Available
  • A hard copy of the Handbook with generic
    laminated flow charts will be distributed to all
    establishments during November 2009
  • Electronic versions of HSP4 and the Handbook are
    available in the Health and Safety section for
    schools on the Orb and in the ASL section of EGfL
    under Planning.
  • ASL nurse, Sonya Crawford, will support schools
    to implement HSP4 and the guidance in the
    handbook. Contact in the first instance Iona
