TheSalem Witch Trials

2
The Beginning
  • The witchcraft hysteria began in 1692.
  • There were two Salems at the time Salem Town and
Salem Village. The trials took place in Salem
    Village.
  • A group of Girls learned of magic and voodoo from
one of the girls familys slave, Tituba.
  • When some of the girls became ill, they were
thought to be afflicted by witchcraft.

3
Accusations
  • Over a hundred people were accused of witchcraft
in Salem at the time of the trials.
  • Not only were women accused of being witches, but
    six men were also accused.
  • If a witch was accused, they might accuse someone
else of being a witch because if they were being
tormented by a witch, they couldnt be one.

4
Executions
  • Twenty four people were executed as witches
    during the Salem Witch Trials.
  • The first witch ever executed was Bridgett
    Bishop, June 10, 1692.
  • One historian said that belief in witches was
part of the villagers religion and putting
witches to death was an expected punishment.

5
Cotton Mather
  • Cotton Mather is considered one of the major
villains from the Salem Witch Trials.
  • He thought all witches, even those who practiced
    good magic were evil.
  • He was a pastor in the Second Church in Boston.
  • Cotton Mather had three wives, (not all at once)
    and fifteen children.

6
Samuel Parris
  • Samuel Parris became the town minister of Salem
    in 1689.
  • The witchcraft hysteria of Salem began in his
    home.
  • Samuel Parris did not let his daughter or his
niece play games like tag or hide-and-seek
because he believed they brought on idleness,
which let the devil work mischief.

7
Tituba the Slave
  • Tituba was Samuel Parris slave.
  • She was an Indian woman taken from South America
    to Barbados as a child.
  • She married Parris other slave, John Indian.
  • Tituba taught a group of girls in Salem about
    voodoo, magic, and fortune telling.
  • She was one of the first accused witches in
    Salem.
  • Tituba went to jail.

What I think
  • I find the Salem Witch Trials very interesting.
  • There were many interesting characters during the
    trials.
  • I was surprised that no witches were burned in
    Salem.
  • I was surprised that only 19 people were killed.
I thought they executed more witches than that.
Many were put in jail, though.
