1
Lecture 2
  • The Two Kingdoms

2
Journal Entry 2
  • Read
  • 1 Corinthians 1434,35
  • Ephesians 522
  • 1 Timothy 28-15
  • Share your reaction. How should we respond to
these words? Can we ignore them?

3
Our ambidextrous God
  • What is the relationship between church and
    state?
  • The church has a role to remind the world of
    Gods will, without becoming political.

4
The kingdom on the Right
  • God is the sovereign Lord of the world he does
    this in two different ways.
  • (Matt. 2221 22)
  • 1. The kingdom of Gods right hand

5
The kingdom on the Right
  • It is a joyful kingdom ruled by Gods grace
forgiveness is lavished we become a citizen
through Baptism we are fed by Gods word and
the grace of the Lords Supper.
  • Citizens pattern their lives on that of the King
sharing love, caring for the poor and needy
our treasure is in heaven. We remain here by
    Gods grace.

6
The kingdom on the Left
  • In response to human violence God gives people
with authority to respond (Gen 96)
  • Luther spoke of 4 areas
  • Political
  • Marriage
  • Economic (work-place)
  • Religious

7
The kingdom on the Left
  • In these areas people (believers and unbelievers)
operate in positions that are callings or
vocations from God. God governs his world
    through such people.

8
Government
  • Through government God protects his people from
external aggression and internal violence and
    criminal conduct.
  • They use the power of authority via laws.
  • Our task is to respect and honour authority
  • (Romans 131-7)

9
Government
  • So God is in control of our world, not Satan.
Unchristian rulers can be excellent leaders and
law givers. (But Christians will care more for
    the poor and defenceless)
  • God works through natural law and people
fulfilling God-given callings. God uses people
whether they realise it or not.

10
Our ambidextrous God
  • But a strict and rigid separation, it is said,
has made Lutherans reluctant to speak out on
social, moral, political and environmental issues.

11
Calling the world to account
  • The Church has not only a right but a duty to be
the conscience of the nation, and speak out about
    evil and injustice.
  • But our words and service need have no strings
    attached.

12
Calling the world to account
  • The Christians task is to pray for governments
    and our world.
  • Special care for those sections of society that
    dont get a fair go.

13
Inhibitors of Social Engagement
  • Judgmentalism
  • Wide variety of beliefs among churches.
  • Each want to say something different?

14
QUESTIONS
  • Do Christians have a right to self defense
  • Can we join the armed forces?
  • Can we sue?
  • Can we swear an oath?
  • Should Lutheran schools be directed by government
    policy?
  • Given that the gospel is the centre of the
Lutheran doctrine, should we allow the expulsion
    of students?

15
Journal Entry 3
  • As a Lutheran School we should insist that we
sing in chapel everyone should join in. After
    all we are Christian community!
  • How would you react to this?
