Our conceptual parents

Elderhostel Institute Network
  • Institute for Retired Professionals 1962
    affiliated with New School for Social Research
  • 1988 30 (of 50) I.L.L.s (Institutes for
    Learning in Retirement) formed a voluntary
    association under the auspices of Elderhostel,
    named Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN)
  • Goals of EIN
  • Help establish new programs throughout the U.S.
  • Provide resources to established institutes
  • Develop an all-inclusive organization for I.L.L.s

3 Communalities among I.L.L.s
  • Sponsored by a college/university to ensure
    academic integrity and exposure to the many
    benefits of being on a college campus.
  • Encouraging older adults to take ownership of
    their institute by joining as members and paying
    dues to support it.
  • Encouraging volunteer member participation in
    their institute and a sense of community among
    the older adult members.

Broader conceptual issues
  • Emphasis on active, productive aging.
  • Confronting the negative stereotypes of aging.
  • Ability of older adults to learn new things.
  • Providing for wisdom sharing
  • Providing models of lifelong learning to the
    university community.
