When will there be a Face Off
  • at the beginning of each period
  • after scoring or after a goal not given by the
    referees
  • after a penalty shot if it did not lead to a
    goal
  • after the ball has been unintentionally damaged
  • when the rink or goal cage has been moved (too
    much)
  • after extraordinary situations (light went off,
    flood, ...)
  • if the referee can not determine the fallible
    team
  • offence with penalty away from the game
  • the offending team gets the ball after a delayed

How is a Face Off Taken Correctly
  • one player of each team, facing the other half
  • defending/away team to chose where to put the
    blade
  • ball still, must not be touched with the blades
  • blades parallel on the same lateral level than
    the ball
  • feet parallel to each other and to the middle
    line
  • normal grip (as in the game) hands above
    marking
  • sign - face off - shown by the near side referee
  • all other players 3 meters minimum distance
    (incl. sticks)

2.4 Hit In
  • after the ball went over the rink or against the
    ceiling
  • single whistle and sign free hit
  • max 1.5 meters away from the rink
  • if behind goal line ? corner face off point
  • 3 meters minimum distance for all opponents
  • can lead to a direct goal
  • ball must be hit with the stick / not pushed
  • time constraint (3 sec after the ball has been
    placed)

  • after offences in connection with the game
  • single whistle and sign free hit plus sign for
    the particular offence
  • at the location where the offence took place /
    min 1.5m away from the rink (referee to show
    position by quickly moving to the place and
    then stepping back)
  • if behind goal line ? corner face off point
  • if in the goal area ? 3.5 meters away from the
    safe area
  • 3 meters minimum distance for all opponents
  • can lead to a direct goal
  • ball must be hit with the stick / not pushed
  • time constraint (3 sec after the ball has been
    placed)

    went into the goal

2.8 Penalty Shot - Execution
  • all players on team benches, except player and
    keeper
  • kick off by referee
  • ball played from middle line
  • ball has to move continously forward (no
    backmove)
  • new backmove at start can be allowed, repeat
    necessary
  • goal keeper at start of penalty must be on the
    goal line
  • ball can be touched as often as the player wants
  • lasts only until the keeper has touched the ball
  • after shot on goal the ball is allowed to move
    backward
  • second shot not allowed

  • consider giving advantage
  • loud whistle sign penalty shot respective
    offence sign
  • (if necessary formal work about bench penalty,
    see later)
  • all other players sent to their team benches
  • one referee on the extended goal line
  • the other referee on the opposite side around
    the middle line, starts penalty shot execution
    with his whistle
  • monitor player during execution
  • watch out for backward movement of the ball
  • acknowledge the goal (sign) ? face off from the
    kick off point
  • or no goal (sign) ? face off at one of the

  • fouled team keeps possession of the ball
  • goal scoring chance continues
  • let the attack go on until the scoring chance is
    over
  • if the team scores in the meantime no penalty
    shot
  • sign same as delayed penalty
  • advantage (raise hand/arm) then sign for penalty
    shot and respective offence

  • one time out per team and game
  • applied for by captain or coach / 1st official
  • immediately or on next interruption / referee
    decision
  • request can be withdrawn if a goal has been
    scored

  • starts when the players assemble in the
    substitution zone
