8Follow and Support Jack Binstead in his goal of
representing Great Britain in the Paralympics
2012 / 2016
- I am 12 years old and suffer with brittle bone
disease. I have used a wheelchair from the age of
three and suffered over 50 broken bones. I live
in Chessington, Surrey and train three times a
week with Velocity wheelchair Racers at New
Malden, plus Gym twice a week and swim. I started
training in January 2006 for fun and exercise but
have since become very competitive and set my
goals high. It is my aim to one day race for my
country in a Paralympic event, to do this I need
to be highly motivated and compete in key races
around the country and soon in European events.
9- My Disability
- Osteogenesis imprefecta (OI) aka (Brittle Bones)
is a genetic condition present from birth.
Medical care for a person with OI requires a
variety of interventions.OI is a genetic
disorder of collagen, a protein which forms the
framework for the bone structure. In OI the
collagen may be of poor quality or there may just
not be enough to support the mineral structure of
the bones. This may make bones weak and fragile
and results in bones being liable to fracture at
any time without truama. Each time a bone is
broken it will set and heal in a slightly less
than perfect position resulting in more breaks
and other problems. For further information see
Brittle Bone Society at - www.brittlebone.org
