publishers
Authors/IP creators
want to provide their  content  to any reader,
everywhere!
But its difficult, because
  • its difficult to create  content  without a
    specific target
  • its risky to delegate customization to third
    parties
  • its costly to customize
  • its costly to manage a range of versions for
    one asset

Standards can help everybody
  • make sure you deliver/are delivered the right
     content
  • Unicode compliant, complete enough, fonts
  • ePub (Daisy/DTBook for accessibility)
  • reflowable formats with CSS rules to provide
    flexibility and ubiquity
  • PDF, HTML5 to preserve significant layout
     readability  (still an issue!)
  • Mime types for embedded media

Digital standards the p-book industry
  • Which of these standards are relevant in a
transitional phase, when content is delivered on
    both digital and physical media?
  • Which standards could emerge and help build a
    digital publishing industry federating new
    industrial and commercial players?
  • Do digital standards prepare a digital publishing
    world, where readers/consumers participate in
    content generation?
