  • To Create an Argument

2
What is an argument?
  • An argument involves the process of establishing
a claim and then proving it with the use of
    logical reasoning, examples, and research.
  • Usually written in a Thesis Statement

3
What is a thesis statement?
  • The MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE in your paper
  • Lets the reader know the main idea of the paper
  • Answers the question What am I trying to
    prove?
  • Not a factual statement, but a claim that has to
    be proven throughout the paper

4
Your Thesis Statement
  • Should deal with academic discourse communities
  • Must be something you could ARGUE (not report)
  • Needs to help organize your writing

5
Examples
  • America will never be first in education if it
keeps ignoring the special needs of children who
grow up in houses where neither parent speaks
    English.
  • School districts in poorer communities need equal
funding as schools in rich communities because
they have more students who need the help.
  • Growing up in an middle-class neighborhood has
given me several educational opportunities that
lower-class students did not have but may have
    needed.

6
Why is organization important in building an
argument?
  • Guides an audience through your reasoning process
  • Offers a clear explanation of each argued point
  • Demonstrates the credibility of the writer
