Gift of Life
  • Thesis Claim One should donate ones organs and
tissue and tell their family of their wishes
because it helps save thousands of lives.
  • My Key Points in Todays Presentation
  • 1. 1. There are thousands of people who are
waiting for organ and tissue transplants in the
Untied States today and there is a need for
    organs.
  • 2. Singing the back of ones drivers license
or donor card, and informing family members of
willingness to donate plays a key role in the
supply and demand of organ donation.
  • 3. The organ and tissue donation program has
helped enrich the lives of many people and also
helps relieve the grief of family members

3
Help is Needed
  • There are 94,465 people on the waiting list.
  • In the United States 80,374 people were waiting
for transplants in 2001 though there were only
6,081 cadaver donations made and 6,499 living
    donations.
  • About 68 people receive an organ transplant
every day in the U.S., while approximately 100
    are added to the waiting.

4
Help is Needed cont..
  • Because of the lack of available donors in this
country, 2,025 kidney patients, 1,347 liver
patients, 458 heart patients and 361 lung
    patients died in 2001.
  • An estimated 10,000 to 14,000 people who die each
year meet the criteria for organ donation, but
les than half of those individuals become actual
    organ donors
  • The donor shortage is not just found in the
United States, but in Canada as well.

5
You Can Make a Difference
  • The Uniform Anatomic Gift Act provides the legal
framework for the process of organ donation in
    the United States.
  • The majority of transplantable organs that are
removed from people after they have died are
currently taken from people who have been
    declared brain dead.
  • If you would like to be an organ donor talk to
your family, add donor status to your drivers
license or fill out the card available at
    www.organdonor.com
  • Successful organ and tissue donation requires
planning and communication among family members
  • Families who know about the patient wishes were
seven times more likely to donate organs.

Organ and Tissue Donation Enriches Lives
  • One can help save or better the lives of more
than 50 people by becoming an organ donor.
  • Organs that an individual can donate include
kidney, lung, liver, heart, pancreas, small
    bowel, and the cornea.
  • The root of organ donation is Latin, donum or
gift, an etymological recognition of the
personal reality that is the human body.
  • Donation giving is essentially an act of
generosity and in its higher reaches and act of
    love.
