developed by Sector Skills for Health, Sector
Skills for Care, Sector Skills for Justice and
    Skills Active.

diverse program of general and applied learning
within occupational contexts from the Children

Going through the Gateway
  • North Hertfordshire SAPG applied through the
gateway process to be able to deliver the SHD
    Diploma in Sep 2008.
  • In the Eastern Region ( Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex,
    Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire)
there were only 2 Consortium who were successful.
  • One of the reasons for this was that the
consortia applying failed to recognise the
significance of the inclusion of Community
    Justice.
  • North Hertfordshire recognised the importance of
this inclusion and also that this was an area in
which we would need to develop stronger links
with employers and that staff delivering the
diploma would need considerable support and
    development.
  • Many of the team have a Health and Social Care
Background but little experience of Community
    Justice.

5
Why is the diploma different ?
  • Content devised by Sector Skills Councils
  • Will therefore have high currency with employers
  • Response to Leitch so includes Functional skills
which must be passed to gain the award.
  • Can include a variety of other qualifications
  • Must be delivered collaboratively across schools
    and colleges
  • Partners have to plan together, share contacts,
    standardise delivery

6
How are we implementing the diploma?
  • Meeting monthly as a development group to discuss
    timetable, curriculum delivery, employer
engagement, skills gaps, resource gaps, CPD.
  • Partnership Curriculum Leader in post.
  • High level of involvement with Sector Skills
    Councils to develop joint approaches.
  • Through this working with Britten Partnership who
are developing the Ambassadors program for Sector
    Skills for Health and Care.
  • The partnership is developing an e-mentor network
for staff with Justice Sector including Day in
    the life of.

7
Employer Engagement and Work Experience
  • The SHD Diploma has a requirement for 10 days
    work experience across the sectors.
  • There is a recognition that work experience in
the Sectors is fraught with difficulties and
    challenges for us all.
  • We can be creative about how we tackle this.
  • We could place students in clerical roles rather
    than operational roles.
  • We could use role plays and hypothetical
    situations.
  • We need people from the sector willing to develop
these with us, and to advise us to ensure the
authenticity. Possibly to support through direct
involvement in lessons and whole group activities.
