- first known landing on Antarctica was made on
February 7, 1821 by Captain John Davis - Antarctica was established as a continent in the
1840s - first scientific expedition in 1897 became
caught in the ice and had to spend the winter in
Antarctica - Sir George Wilkins and C. B. Eielson flew the
first airplane over Antarctica in 1928
