    supporting GP Recruitment Retention

Why was action needed?
  • The White Paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say
  • Relationship between under doctored areas and
    significant deprivation
  • Top priority for the Department of Health

Our ApproachWhat we did and how we did it
  • Developed and undertook a national postal survey
    and literature review in Autumn 2005
  • Commissioned an independent Management Consultant
    to analyse the findings of the survey /
    literature review and to develop a model to
    optimise GP Recruitment and Retention in
    Nottinghamshire

Summary of Findings
  • The survey achieved a 39 response rate (117 /
    303 PCTs responding to the survey)
  • 67 PCTs (over half) reporting that there were no
    known initiatives schemes in place to support GP
    Recruitment and Retention
  • Overall the survey / literature search yielded
    some useful information in relation to various
    initiatives and schemes, but lacked evidence of
    their success

Future Plans
  • Establish a multi-agency partnership including
    MPD, GPs, GP Recruitment Leads to ensure a
    coherent and inclusive approach across the county
  • Develop a GP Workforce Toolkit to support
    practices and PCTs in undertaking the various
    initiatives / schemes based on good practice
  • Pilot the Toolkit and Model with a cohort of
    practices March 07
  • Nottinghamshire Teaching PCT to oversee the pilot
    project and evaluate the schemes to inform the
    future development of the model
  • Evaluate the pilot and review and refine the
    Toolkit and Model before dissemination
