Purpose of this session
  • To identify ways in which you can help your
  • child make progress at school and at home
  • To develop an understanding of
  • examinations and assessments in Year 11

3

  • To what extent do you agree or disagree with this
    statement.
  • I personally want my child to be successful in
    the future

4
Parents the jewel in the crown
  • Fact A child is at school for approximately
13.6 of a year - they are under parental care
for 86.4 of the rest of the year!

Understanding how your child learns
  • People learn in different ways and there are
  • basically three types of learning styles
  •
  • Visual Learners
  • Audio Learners
  • Kinaesthetic

9
Supporting your child
  • To reflect on their learning
  • To develop confidence as an independent learner
  • To review progress towards their targets

10
Support at home
  • Learning at home is as important as learning in
  • school.
  • Teachers help students develop learning skills.
  • You can help your child use and improve these
  • skills.

11
Short sessions are best
  • If students split their study into 30 minute
sessions with 5 minute breaks they are able to
remember much more at the end of the session.
  • However, after a session memorising notes, up to
80 of new information is lost in the first 24
hours. Pupils need to go back and look at the
information again on a regular basis and this is
where parents can help by asking your child to
    explain what they have learned.

12
Study Timetables
  • Study timetables help to organise students time
and establish a routine. It is also important
when students plan revision timetables they build
    in time for themselves.

13
Creating the right environment to study
  • It is important that students are studying and
revising in the right sort of environment. They
need to make sure they have -
  •
  • A tidy, undisturbed place to work
  • A comfortable chair
  • A table with enough room for books etc
  • All the books they need school notes, revision
    guides etc
  • Pens, pencils, highlighters, scrap paper.

14
Study Support
  • The Sam Learning website helps children learn and
revise for GCSEs. It has revision challenges as
well as tests that will support your child in
preparing for their trial and final exams.
  • Encourage your child to use it at school, the
local library or in the comfort of home.

15
Study Support
  • Opportunities exist for students to study after
school to support them in achieving their
    potential.
  • The E-learning centre is an ICT rich environment
which Yr 11 students have the use of at
    lunchtimes after school.
  • The Learning Resource Centre is a quiet space for
    independent learning.
