Title: Y11 Parents Consultation Evening

1
Y11 Parents Consultation Evening
  • Tuesday 10th February 2009

2
Purpose of this evening
  • Consultation

3
With whom ?
  • Subject teachers
  • Mrs Jacobs, Head of Year 11
  • Mrs Russell, Head of Student Guidance
  • Mr White, Director of the Sixth Form
  • Mr Price, Deputy Head (Academic)

4
What about ?
  • Interpretation of trial exam results
  • The importance of upcoming coursework (and of
    meeting deadlines)
  • The way forward in each subject
  • Where to seek help - before exam leave starts
  • Revision strategies
  • Back up plans (where necessary).

5
The purpose of trial exams
  • To give students an idea of the style of
questions that they will be facing and of the
    time pressures to expect
  • To allow them to make rubric errors now that
hopefully prevent them coming unstuck in the
    summer
  • To enable staff and students alike to identify
areas of both academic strength and weakness and
allow focused support to be provided.

6
How to interpret the results
  • If your results were good well done, keep up
the good work and aim high.
  • If they were satisfactory there is still room
for improvement and it is not too late, if you
    act now.
  • If your results were poor, take this as a wake up
call most staff would expect to push every
student up by at least one grade between now and
the exams but you need to want to improve if
    this is to happen.

7
The importance of your GCSE results
  • You have spent two years of your life on them
  • They are your passport into Further Education
  • Universities will look at them when trying to
differentiate between candidates all predicted to
get the same grades at A Level.

8
What to do now
  • It is only 9 weeks until the first exam on 11th
    May
  • You should never say that you have no work to
do there is always something to be getting on
    with
  • Meet your coursework deadlines
  • Review your notes, check your understanding
  • Ask for help, before exam leave begins.

9
Dropping of GCSEs
  • This is not a decision to be made lightly.
  • I would discourage it as a principle.
  • You have done four and a half terms work which
you throw away if you drop the subject.
  • Almost all BMS students get a grade A-C.
  • Only to happen if we feel that a student is
nowhere near getting a grade C and that dropping
a subject will help their overall grades.
  • It may mean that they can not qualify for entry
    to the 6th Form.
  • However if you are still convinced then the first
point of contact for this should be your tutor.
