PRE-WW II
  • War raging in EuropeCivil Aviation shut down
  • American Aviators wanted to prevent this
  • CAP formed 6 days before Pearl Harbor under the
    Office of Civilian Defense
  • 1 December, 1941

DURING THE WAR
  • After the war, a German commander confirmed that
    coastal U-boat operations were withdrawn from
    U.S. waters because of those "damned little red
    and yellow airplanes."
  • Many pilots joined because they were too old or
    ineligible for military service
  • Half a million hours, two submarines sunk, saved
    hundreds of crash victims

AFTER THE WAR
  • Transferred to Army Air Force-29 April 1943
  • Aviation cadet recruiting
  • Public Law 476 July 1 1946
  • CAP would not participate in combat operations
    again
  • Public Law 557 May 26 1948
  • CAP became the USAF Auxiliary
