Title: Sir Isaac Newton

1
Sir Isaac Newton
  • and how the apple fell.

2
The early life of Sir Isaac Newton
  • Born in 1642 in the small village of Woolsthorpe,
    England
  • Father died a few months before he was born and
he was raised by his grandmother.
  • Had a bad start in school and was one of the
poorest students in his grammar school.
  • It is said he was cracked in the head (by a bully
or apple) and let his genius out.

3
Big ideas at Cambridge University.
  • Discovered the universal law of gravitation in
    1666.
  • Developed Calculus.
  • Discovered that white light is composed of every
    color in the spectrum.
  • Studied Dynamics (the branch of mechanics that
deals with the motion of objects).
  • Developed ideas on the motions of planets and
    comets.

4
The personality of a genius.
  • The feeling of being abandoned by his mother at
age two haunted him throughout his life.
  • Was said to be suspicious and have a quarrelsome
    temper.
  • Extremely absent-minded, especially when trying
to figure out a mathematical concept.
  • Sometimes could not remember if he had eaten, or
    not.

5
And it all comes to an end..
  • Retired from research in 1693 after suffering a
    nervous breakdown.
  • Took a government position as Master of the Mint
in 1699 and helped to prevent counterfeit of the
    coinage.
  • Knighted in 1705 by Queen Anne.
  • Died in 1727 at the age of 85.

6
Some quotes from Newton...
  • If I have been able to see further, it was only
because I stood on the shoulders of
    giants.Letter to Robert Hooke
  • I know not what I appear to the world, but to
myself I seem to have been only like a boy
playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in
now and then finding a smoother pebble or a
prettier shell, whilest the great ocean of truth
lay all undiscovered before me.Quoted in D
    Brewster, Memoirs of Newton
  • Truth is ever to be found in the simplicity, and
not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.
