Title: Lets Rock
1Lets Rock
- By Pam Rountree

2Bet You Didnt Know..
- Aggregates are the only mineral commodity
produced in every state in the union. Every year
more than two billion tons of this material are
used in the United States.
3Imagine life without . . .
- highways
- paint
- plastics
- medicines
- glass
- driveways
- concrete sidewalks
- bridges
- wallboard
- vinyl
- brick and stone buildings and homes
- concrete blocks
- roofing tiles
- asphalt shingles
- minerals for agriculture
.. all these things are made possible with
crushed stone products ..
4AND . . .
- More than a million employees and their families
rely on the countrys construction materials
industries for their livelihoods. Many live and
work in your community. Thousands of other folks
rely on this resource and industry to make
possible other things like schools, hospitals,
and airports. Rogers Group employs 1,700 people
and does business in 5 states and numerous
communities.
5Remember that
- Every small town,Every big city, and Every road
and building in themare built with stone!
6Where do you see stone in your town?
7Where do we get this rock from?
- Open pit mining and quarrying is the most common.
- Some are mined underground too.
8How Aggregates Are Made
- First - Geologists locate large sources of
aggregate in the earth called reserves.
Geologists are scientists who specialize in the
study of earth sciences and rocks and minerals.
9Next..
- dozers remove the top layer of grass, dirt and
rock called overburden. Near the rocks outer
edge, long holes are drilled downward and loaded
with explosive. The rock is blasted to loosen and
break the rock into pieces. Workers follow
special safety precautions, rules and regulations
when blasting occurs in a quarry.
10After that
- A haul truck transports rock to the crushing
plant. Rocks can be crushed into many different
sizes of aggregate with a machine called a jaw
crusher. The machine works like a jaw by crushing
and chewing large rocks into small rocks. It is
usually stationed in a permanent place at the
quarry. (Activity Chocolate Chip Cookie Mining)
11Then
- crushed stone passes through vibrating screens.
Screening sorts and separates the rock into the
different sizes which our company produces.
Some stone will be washed with water to clean it
so it can be used in cement and other types of
building products. Washing removes fine grains of
sand, clay and dirt from the rock.
12Finally
- After crushing, screening and washing, the
crushed stone is conveyed or hauled to stock
piles
Loaders move the rock and place it into customer
trucks when the rock is sold.
13What is reclamation?
- The goal of reclamation is to return the land to
a beneficial use. - Geologist make a plan for how the quarry will
look when mining is complete.
14- Quarries can be turned into
- Lakes
- Wildlife parks
- Golf courses
- Office parks
- Roller coaster rides
15How does this relate to my community?
- Operators and planners have to select a strategy
that will benefit the community. - They also want to make sure that their plan
provides an economic incentive for the operator.
16Why A Quarry Should Be In Your Neighborhood
- It is estimated that between 70 and 85 percent of
crushed stone is used in the construction of
roads, buildings and communities. - A quarry is usually located closed to where
crushed stone will be used.
17Think About This!
- Do you think it makes a difference if the crushed
stone is transported far away or close by? - The distance crushed stone must be transported
plays a significant role in it's actual cost.
Cost for crushed stone increases as distance to
delivery increases
18Example..
- Think about all of the construction going on
around us. - Do you think our community would save or spend
more money if the quarry were close by? Why?
19Finally
- Having a quarry near you adds tax dollars and
jobs to your community. - Quarries can make good neighbors!
LIME E. STONE SAYS "A QUARRY SHOULD BE NEAR
YOU!"
20Glossary
- Aggregate - consisting of a mixture of minerals
separable by mechanical means. - Economic incentive the operator needs to make
as much money as possible in order to continue
mining.
