The theme of the IP
  • The Intensive Programme for 2008 will focus on
  • European Heritages and Collective Memories
  • Your IP Paper should be clearly related to this
    general topic.

4 sub-themes
  • There are four sub-themes within the main theme
  • Transmission of values, beliefs, rules and
    patterns as part of the process of building civil
    society
  • Construction and reconstruction of memory and
    identity (local, regional, national and European)
  • Conservation of European artifacts heritage
    planning and management
  • Invention of tradition, heritage and identity in
    modern/post-modern communication and
    intercultural co-existence.
  • You should be able to place your paper in one of
    these sub-themes.

IP Paper length
  • Your paper must be between 4,500 and 6,000 words
    long.
  • In most cases, you will have 350 to 400 words
    per page.
  • Therefore, the final paper will probably be
    12-15 pages long.
  • Paper length includes citations and footnotes.

Required IP paper elements
  • In addition to the body text, your IP Paper must
    include
  • a cover page
  • an abstract
  • a bibliography
  • These DO NOT count into the word length of your
    paper.

Cover page
  • Your cover page must include
  • Title of paper
  • Authors name
  • 1st semester University
  • 2nd semester University
  • sub-theme
  • (Cover page template will be provided in a
    separate attachment)

Abstract
  • Your abstract should be between 100 and 200 words
    long.
  • Your abstract must include
  • Your hypothesis or thesis statement
  • A concise description of the purpose, methods,
    scope, contents
  • Do not include citations or long quotations.

Bibliography
  • Your bibliography should include no less than 10
    works cited in the body of your text.
  • Avoid padding your bibliography with books that
    you did not use in writing this paper.
  • Use a variety of sources, including books and
    articles from academic journals.
  • Please use MLA format for your bibliography
  • Author surname, given name. Title. Place of
    publication publisher, year.

Optional IP Paper elements
  • In addition to the required elements, your IP
    Paper may include
  • Labelled sub-sections
  • Annexes
  • A glossary
  • Do not count these in the word length of your
    paper.

Labelled subsections
  • Your paper should be subdivided into labelled
    subsections.
  • For example
  • Introduction
  • Definitions
  • etc, etc.
  • Analysis
  • Conclusion

Annexes
  • If you decide that it is necessary, you may
    include annexes to your paper. Please number
    them separately.
  • For example
  • Annex 1 Sample Questionaire
  • Annex 2 Charts
  • etc.
  • These annexes are not counted in the total word
    count.

Glossary
  • You may include a glossary if you believe that
    some readers may not be familiar with a number of
    terms, such as
  • Acronyms
  • Foreign terms
  • Specialist jargon

Citation
  • The focus of this IP is on the Humanities.
  • Therefore, all students are kindly requested to
    use standard MLA citations and bibliography
    (commonly used in the Humanities)
  • MLA uses in-line citation in the following basic
    format (author, page)
  • For example, (Durkheim, 123) to reference page
    123 of a book by Durkheim which can be found in
    the bibliography.

Internet references
  • All internet references must include the URL
    (website address)
  • All internet references must include the date
    downloaded
  • PDF sources are preferable to HTML sources

Footnotes
  • Use footnotes for digressions and other notes on
    the body text
  • Do not use footnotes for citations

Formatting
  • For your IP Paper please use the following
    formatting
  • Times New Roman font
  • 12 point font size
  • full justified text (evenly touching both left
    and right margins)
  • 1.5 spacing

  • You must send your IP abstract to your 2nd
    semester coordinator by April 21st, 2008. (Please
    DO NOT send your IP abstract directly to the
    coordinators in Krakow, this will be done by your
    coordinators).
  • FILE NAME Your file name should be structured in
    the following way
  • subtheme number - last name - first name - 1st
    university country - 2nd university country
    example 2 - Czerska - Karolina - PL - IT
  • Sweden SW Netherlands NL Germany D Italy IT
    France FR Spain SP Czech CZ Poland PL

19 May 2008
  • You must submit the final draft of your IP paper
    to your 2nd semester university by 19 May.
    (Again, please DO NOT send the IP paper directly
    to the Euroculture Coordinators at the
    Jagiellonian University in Kraków).
  • Please make sure your paper is in pdf file, only.
  • The same file name structure applies to the IP
    paper.

30 May 2008
  • By 30 May, you will receive a copy of the paper
    which you will comment on as a referee. You must
    read it carefully and critically and prepare a
    peer response.
  • You will also receive other group papers and are
    expected to read these papers so that you may
    discuss them actively.

Oral presentation structure
  • There will be 10 -15 students in each group.
  • All group members will have read the other papers
    beforehand.
  • Each student will present his or her own paper
    (15 min).
  • You are encouraged to use PowerPoint in your
    presentation.

Oral presentation response
  • Student presentations will be followed by
  • A peer response (7 min)
  • Group discussion (5 min)
  • Tutors response and conclusion (3 min)
  • Therefore, each presentation will last a total of
    roughly 30 minutes.

Peer response (7 min)
  • In addition to presenting their own work, all
    students must prepare a response to one of the
    papers presented in their group.
  • Peer responses will be assigned by the IP
    organisers.
  • Before the start of the IP, you will receive a
    copy of the paper which you must respond to.
  • Peers must provide critical commentary on the
    paper which is assigned to them. Please prepare
    for your response carefully.
