I was reading Time magazine
  • As eye-popping as Barack Obama's second-quarter
    fund-raising total was--it raked in 31 million
for his campaign for the 2008 Democratic
nomination, beating even the much vaunted Clinton
money machine by better than 10 million in funds
for the primary race--what really has the
political classes chattering is another figure
Obama reported 258,000. That's the number of
people his campaign says have already donated to
him, and it amounts to more than a doubling of
his fund-raising base in the past three months.
"He's got a much more viral campaign than we do,"
says an envious Hillary Clinton strategist, using
a term for word-of-mouth advertising and
marketing techniques. "He's got a real buzz about
    him (time.com, 7/5/07).

DO NOW please answer
  • What does the number 258,000 represent?
  • How much money was donated if each contributor
    gave the same amount?
  • Compare Mr. Obamas fundraising to Mrs.
    Clintons.
  • Why is this information newsworthy?

Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?
  • The problem is that if language arts and
English teachers are the only ones teaching
reading, students arent going to learn how to
read different types of texts (Tovani 25).

7
Is math literacy?
  • Having the minimum amount of knowledge for
    everyday purposes.
  • Knowledge of the mechanics of mathematical skills
the ability to apply them to everyday
    situations.
  • My experience has shown me that math literacy
    is
  • Not just someone who has lots of math knowledge,
but is able to apply these skills to given
    situations and everyday experiences.

8
What does literacy look like in a math class?
  • Unit planning/backwards planning
  • Incorporated integrated into the 5-step lesson
    plan
  • Authentic, meaningful connections
  • Math journal responses, graphic organizers,
    developing project ideas
  • Multiple Intelligences Projects

9
MI Projects
  • Stairs Project slope, equation of a line
  • Cookie Project multi-step equations, point of
    equilibrium, TOV
  • Postcard Project estimating profit,
    price-setting, supply demand, equations
  • Mural Project scale, ratios, proportions
  • Business Proposal combination

10
The Cookie Project
  • You bring the cookies, Ill bring the milk!

and decide on an appropriate selling price in an
    effort to make a profit.

13
Math Part Finances
  • Cost Equation
  • Calculate the cost of the ingredients in one
    batch of cookies
  • Use page 182 as a guide
  • Profit Equation
  • Research a reasonable price for selling
    individual cookies
  • Think about quality versus quantity
  • Analyzing Data
  • Create a table graph to model cost and profit
  • Illustrate the point at which you would make
    profit
  • Create a hand-out that shows this data

14
Written Part Mixing the Ingredients
  • Write a report (at least 3 paragraphs) about your
    capitalistic cookie adventure.
  • Keep the following questions in mind

recipe this will result in a major deduction of
    points.
