HP Infrastructre
  • Remind me, why am I doing this?
  • ProLiant Servers are equipped with hardware and
firmware to monitor certain abnormal conditions
such as abnormal temperature readings, fan
failures, ECC memory errors, etc and the above
will monitor these conditions and report it to
the administrator by printing a message on the
console, and also logging the condition into the
Pro- Liant Integrated Management Log (IML). The
Insight Manager agents can also be used to notify
    the administrator of abnormal conditions.

HP BIOS Features Automatic Server Recovery
  • ASR-2 is a feature that causes the system to
restart when a catastrophic operating system
error occurs, such as a blue screen, ABEND
(abnormal end), or panic. A system fail-safe
timer, the ASR-2 timer, starts when the System
Management driver, also known as the Health
Driver, is loaded. When the operating system is
    functioning properly, the system periodically
resets the timer. However, when the operating
system fails, the timer expires and restarts the
    server.
  • ASR-2 increases server availability by restarting
the server within a specified time after a system
hang or shutdown. At the same time, the Insight
Manager 7 console notifies you by sending a
message to a designated pager number that ASR-2
has restarted the system. You can disable ASR-2
from the Insight Manager 7 console or through
    RBSU.

6
HP BIOS Features
  • Taken from an HP Manual on a DL380 G3 Proliant
    Server
  • ASR Status enables or disables ASR. By default,
    this setting is Enabled
  • ASR Timeout sets a timeout limit for resetting a
server that is not responding. The default
    timeout limit is 10 minutes.
  • Thermal Shutdown determines when the server
automatically powers down due to dangerous
temperatures. When the setting is enabled, the
Health Driver initiates a shutdown of the system
when the server temperature is within 5 degrees
of critical level. When the setting is disabled,
the Health Driver shuts down the system at
critical level. By default, this setting is
    Enabled.

7
Thermal Shutdown
  • With the Health Driver loaded and Thermal
Shutdown enabled in RBSU, the Health Driver
performs an orderly shutdown if it detects a
cautionary temperature level. If the server
detects a critical temperature level before the
orderly shutdown occurs, the server performs an
    immediate shutdown. Additionally, the Health
Driver performs an orderly shutdown if the
following minimum requirements are not met one
working fan in the I/O zone, five working fans in
the processor zone, and one working fan in the
    power supply zone.
  • With the Health Driver loaded and Thermal
Shutdown disabled in RBSU, the server performs an
immediate shutdown if it detects a critical
    temperature level.
  • Without Health Driver loaded, the server performs
an immediate shutdown if it detects a critical
    temperature level.
  • IMPORTANT An immediate shutdown is a
hardware-controlled function and it overrides any
    firmware or software actions.

Platform Support Pack
  • Where is it?

    oftwareDescription.jsp?langenccUSswItemMTX-4a
    d9ca2477f04f7ba60317dcb1
  • Contains the Extended Feature Supplement
  • Drivers - such as ida ciss and hpsas
  • These come as a separate floppy disk image
  • Utilities such as /usr/bin/compaq/diags/ciss/cis
    s_menu
  • Change to directory containing EFS execute
"pkgadd -d pwd/cpqefs.pkg" and follow menu
based screens to complete EFS installation

11
Installing the EFS
  • Only pick the appropriate drivers so as not to
install and run drivers and daemons which are
    unnecessary in production. Installing
    inappropriate utilities can cause performance
problems as these daemons will be probing for
    hardware you may not have.
  • You will need to install the "ASM" (casm), Health
Event Logging (cpqw) and Remote Insight Board
(crid) drivers if you wish to use the Compaq
Insight Management tools. The "crid" would be
optional depending on where you were using or had
installed a RiLO or ILO Integrated Lights Out
    Board.
  • NB. The hpASM XL is for G5 servers and above and
it will not be necessary to select the Health
Event Logging daemon as it will fail when
    "hpasmxl" is selected.

12
The Insight Management Agents
  • HP Insight Management Agents Installation
  • Login as super user to SCO Unix System.
  • Change to directory containing MgmtAgents
execute "./install.sh" and follow the prompts to
    complete installation of Foundation, Server,
Storage and NIC Insight Management Agents
  • Point a web browser at the system and key in
    http//IP_ADDRESS2301 or http//machine_name
2301. This will bring up the device home page
for the server if it is running web-enabled
management software, and display a list of the
    components.

Compaq Insight Management SNMP Software
  • To receive SNMP Traps to a PC which is running
the Insight Management Software then install
either the last 32Bit GUI version of the
software, v5.50, available from HP which runs on
    NT4, Windows 2000, XP etc
  • Or install the latest Version which will require
a version of MSDE to be installed and will need a
minimum of 512MB of RAM to run and in both cases
you MUST install and run this as the
Administrator to receive SNMP Traps and add new
    servers.
