3AVB History
Founded in 1988, Club Tonka is a landmark
volleyball club in Minnesota. Club Tonkas 5
teams in 1988 were among only 43 team competing
in the North Country Region at that time. Today,
there are over 3,000 teams competing in that same
region. Over the years, Club Tonka has served
over 36 communities, 3,000 players, and trained
an average 12 teams per season. In the midst of
great growth and an ever changing youth sports
culture, Club Tonka, now AVB, will never lose
sight of the reason for its existence to
transform club volleyball so volleyball can
transform players.
4Why Armour Volleyball?
There has been growing concern that we only serve
a certain geographic area of the Twin Cities
(Minnetonka). In addition, with the clubs change
in leadership, its time for a fresh start and a
new look. Armour Volleyball is a strong name that
ties together excellence, teamwork, and
discipline and is a name our players can be proud
of!
5AVB Vision
Armour Volleyball exists to train volleyball
players to execute fundamentals of life and sport
to their individual maximum potential. In doing
so we will create and sustain an elite volleyball
program where girls can find truth and purpose in
their lives by learning the value of and
experiencing the joy that comes from competing
with character and never settling for anything
less than personal excellence.
6AVB Vision a Reality?
When a game is on the line, can we really live up
to the Armour Volleyball vision? Can we really
expect coaches, players, fans, and parents to
uphold this positive culture if it might result
in losing the game? The answer has to be, "Yes!"
All involved must realize that winning cannot be
the only goal. Maintaining a positive culture
where positive character traits are developed in
our players must come first. When the game is on
the line, it can take a high level of moral
courage to keep our focus on what is really
important, but if we can do that, we will teach
our youth an invaluable lesson. We must believe
that maintaining this positive culture is so
vital that we are willing to stand up to others
that are putting it in danger. Our vision at
Armour Volleyball stretches far beyond winning a
specific game to making a lasting impact on the
lives of our players.
7AVB Coaches
Coaches realize that what they are teaching their
players carries far beyond the court into the
classroom, the home, and even into future jobs.
Coaches have their team, as well as individual
players, focus on their effort and personal
improvement, rather than simply on the results of
the game. They help players recognize that
mistakes are an inevitable and imperative part of
the process and that a key to success is being
able to respond to mistakes with renewed
determination. This way, players gain a sense of
control over their own development and confidence
in their ability to succeed, in life as well as
in volleyball.
8Philosophy on Playing Time
The rule is that the team comes first. The result
of this rule is that no team reaches its
potential without every player making a
contribution. Each player must also be aware of
their importance to the team. Every player gets
opportunities. There are at least two kinds of
opportunities. First, the opportunity to earn a
playing time is always there every player gets
the same opportunities in practice to earn
playing time. Whether in game situations or
practice, the coach is responsible for
identifying the strongest line-up, which means
constant re-evaluation. The second type,
opportunities to compete in game situations,
varies between 1s and 2s teams. The higher the
team level, the more it is true that playing time
is earned, not given. Whoever is playing best
will play the most, but this is always subject to
change based on what a player does with the
opportunities in practice.
9Appropriate Response to Playing Time Concerns
Those players who play less than others are vital
parts of a teams success. First, they always
have the opportunity to show they can help the
team improve. No starting line-up is ever
permanent. Also, they can raise the level of
play at practice, maintain the level of play when
called upon, or raise the level -- thus earning
more playing time. When a player isnt happy with
her role, the appropriate response is to be sure
she understands what she needs to do, then work
as hard as possible to effectuate the change.
10Whats more important? Winning or having fun?
There is no need to choose between the two. We
believe in winning, and we believe in enjoying
the experience, but these are both components and
by-products of a goal which is more immediate and
more far-reaching hard work. There are many
things we cant control, our level of effort, and
our attitude are not among them.
11Hard Work
Social, carefree fun happens spontaneously in the
context of a cohesive group bound together by
working hard towards a common goal. Consistent
with this, we focus on providing the structure
where a team can feel proud of its efforts. For
AVB, the fun we seek is the deep satisfaction of
knowing that you have given your all, whether or
not you win. Things are more likely to go your
way when you stop worrying about whether youre
going to win or lose and focus your full
attention on whats happening right this moment.
- Phil Jackson, Sacred Hoops
12What if I play other sports?
If an athlete participates in another sport, we
expect her to work out scheduling differences
with her coach. If a game for the other sport
conflicts with an AVB practice, the athlete will
be excused from the AVB practice. If an AVB
competition conflicts with another sport
competition, the coach and the athlete will
decide, on a case-by-case basis, what to do so
she is best served. In-season athletic
competitions for school take priority. 1s
team players, please remember that playing on
other high school teams is not forbidden, but a
spirit of excellence and commitment to come to
volleyball after other sports practices or games
is expected.
13Physical training precautions
Athletes best performances will occur when they
are on the top of their game physically and
mentally. In order to maintain the body and mind
at a peak performance level, an athlete must
learn to handle various stresses and deal with
the recovery process following workouts. These
stresses can be any one or a combination of the
following poor nutrition, illness, fatigue (i.e.
lack of sleep), insufficient rest between workout
sessions, emotional stress from schoolwork,
friends or family situations, or other
extracurricular activities. It is of paramount
importance that you take these factors into
account when scheduling your time and activities.
The body can only handle a certain amount of
stress within a given time period before illness
and injuries occur. The practice and competition
schedules designed throughout the season by our
AVB coaches have taken into account the need for
adequate rest and recovery in avoiding excessive
stress. Please review the commitments for Club
and all other activities and create a time
management schedule for what is found in that
schedule.
14Movement between teams
Occasionally an athlete will be moved from one
team to another. Movement is at the sole
discretion of the Club. Athletes who move to
another team will have their dues pro-rated,
subtracting or adding, as needed. No athlete
will be moved to another team until the move is
discussed with the parents of the players
involved. On occasion a player may be asked to
substitute on another team for a specific weekend
event or scrimmage. This is not unusual and often
gives an opportunity for wonderful and lasting
memories.

16Practice Policies
1. Scheduled practice time is start
time. 2. Volleyball shoes are to be carried into
the practice facility and only worn for practice.
3. All athletes are expected to attend every
practice. Only an illness serious enough to keep
the athlete home from school or a genuine family
emergency is a legitimate excuse for missing
practice. Regardless of the reason, if an
athlete misses an excessive number of practices,
her playing time may decrease. 4. IF AN ATHLETE
CANNOT BE AT PRACTICE, THE ATHLETE IS EXPECTED TO
CALL THE COACH A MINIMUM OF 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE.
It is the athletes responsibility (not the
parents) to reach the coach before the practice
starts. 5. Athletes are encouraged to bring water
(in an unbreakable container identified with the
players name) to practices and
tournaments. 6. In case of inclement weather, a
predetermined team-calling tree will be used to
notify you of practice cancellations.
17Fundraising Opportunities
- MCA players net set up
- Cookie Dough Sales
- Gift Wrap Sales
- Pointsetta Sales
18Tournaments
- All athletes are expected to be in the gym, READY
TO WARM-UP, at the scheduled arrival time. This
usually means the athlete needs to arrive at the
site 10-15 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival
time. - Proper demeanor is expected of all members of the
Club (coaches, athletes, parents, supporters) at
all tournaments this includes treating members
of the officiating crew with respect. - 3. Athletes and/or parents are responsible for
providing transportation for their athlete to and
from the regional tournament sites. - 4. All athletes are expected to attend every
tournament. IF AN ATHLETE CANNOT BE AT A
TOURNAMENT, THE ATHLETE IS EXPECTED TO INFORM THE
COACH AS SOON AS THE ATHLETE KNOWS THEY WILL BE
ABSENT. It is the athletes (not the parents)
responsibility to make arrangements with the
coach. - Athletes will not be allowed to leave a
tournament site until excused by the coach. - At no point during the course of a tournament is
it ever acceptable for a parent to approach a
coach about their daughters playing time or how
he/she would coach the team more effectively.
19Officiating
- All AVB athletes are required to help with the
line judging, scorekeeping, and officiating.
Officiating is the shared responsibility of the
entire team. Therefore, no athletes may leave a
tournament before the assignment is completed
regardless of whether or not an individual has an
officiating duty. - All AVB athletes are required to attend an
officiating clinic on December 1. Athletes may
choose to attend a clinic at Southview Middle
School in Edina (9-1030am) or at Sun Path
Elementary in Shakopee (10-1130am). Sign up for
one of these clinics at the door.
